Description
Operates a variety of construction equipment and trucks utilized in construction, maintenance and repair activities; performs a variety of semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance of sanitary and storm sewer systems.

- Maintain all aspects of the wastewater collection system and to comply with state, federal and local requirements.
- Operates trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling and unloading of various equipment, materials and supplies.
- Operates construction or power equipment, such as flusher, back-hoe, dump truck, air compressor, jack hammer, asphalt roller, sand spreader, trencher and tapping machine.
- Operates other small equipment and tools to maintain sanitary and storm sewer systems. Works with and assists in hoisting material, tools, equipment and any related work.
- Maintain daily work records.
- Excavates in streets, alleys and easements both mechanically and manually for repair and installation of utilities.
- Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor; cleans equipment.
- Performs on-call duties to respond to requests for services after normal work hours and weekends.
- Works overtime when necessary, available and responds to after-hour emergencies and call outs when requested.
- Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards. Assists other departments as required.
- Perform other duties as required.
Requirements
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Considerable knowledge of equipment operating principles; working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to heavy equipment operations; working knowledge of the methods, materials and tools used in utility maintenance work. Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment. Ability to understand and follow oral or written instruction. Ability to read and write in English. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; Ability to observe proper safety precautions; Ability to establish effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors and the public; Ability to perform heavy manual tasks under varying weather conditions; Ability to drive and operate a variety of equipment under varying conditions; Ability to work from construction specifications or blueprints. Knowledge of state and federal requirements to maintain a safe work environment when working in rights-of-way required.
Minimum Education, Experience and Certification
- Graduation from high school or GED equivalent;
- Four (4) years' experience involving the use of medium and heavy equipment, two of which must have been related to utility or street systems;
- Valid State Operator's;
- CDL Certification or ability to obtain one;
- Water and/or Wastewater license within 6 months of hire.
