Public Works Superintendent 

City of Converse, Texas

Salary: Starting at $62,368.94 annually (DOQ)

Status: Full-time, Exempt

The City of Converse is seeking an experienced Public Works Superintendent to join our Public Works Department. Reporting to the Assistant Director of Public Works, this position provides hands-on leadership for daily field operations, including streets, right-of-way, and parks and grounds.

Requirements

Key Responsibilities 

• Plan, schedule, and direct field operations for streets, parks and grounds, and right-of-way maintenance.
• Supervise and train employees; ensure safety standards, productivity, and quality of work.
• Coordinate work orders, materials, and equipment needs with department leadership. 
• Inspect public infrastructure and right-of-way areas; ensure compliance with City and TxDOT specifications.
• Oversee equipment operation, maintenance, and safety inspections.
• Participate in emergency and after-hours operations as needed.
• Respond to citizen inquiries and coordinate resolutions.
• Maintain accurate work records, reports, and documentation.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; technical training preferred.
• Five years of experience in public works maintenance or construction (streets, parks, or related functions).
• Supervisory experience in field operations preferred.
• Valid Texas Class C driver’s license; must be able to obtain a Class B license during employment.
• Ability to work outdoors in all conditions and perform physically demanding tasks as needed.

Physical and Mental Requirements

This position requires the ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and on uneven surfaces. The Superintendent must be able to stand, walk, bend, and lift or move objects up to 80 pounds unassisted. The role involves operating and inspecting heavy equipment, using hand and power tools safely, and responding quickly in emergency situations.

Strong attention to detail, sound judgment, and clear communication are essential. The position requires the ability to maintain focus under pressure, meet deadlines, and lead crews effectively in a fast-paced environment.
