Position Type: Temporary / Seasonal (Summer Internship) Location: La Vernia, Tx Department: Planning & Development / Administration Duration: Summer 2026 (approx. May–August, flexible based on academic schedule)
Position Summary The City of La Vernia is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Summer Intern to support daily operations within the Planning & Development Department. This internship provides hands-on experience in municipal government, with a focus on permitting, land use, zoning, and community development.
Preference will be given to graduate students; however, qualified undergraduate students will also be considered.
Key Responsibilities Assist with the intake, review, and processing of building permits for residential and commercial development Support processing of ancillary permits (fencing, accessory structures, signage, etc.) Provide customer service to residents, contractors, and developers (in-person, phone, and email) Perform clerical and administrative duties, including filing, data entry, and document management Maintain and update permit records and tracking systems Assist staff with basic research related to zoning, land use, and development regulations Support special projects related to planning, permitting, or community development as assigned Collaborate with city staff to ensure efficient and accurate service delivery

Requirements
Preferred Areas of Study Urban Planning Land Use / Zoning Community or Regional Planning Public Administration (Bachelor’s or Master’s level) Related fields in government, policy, or development
Minimum Qualifications Currently enrolled in an accredited undergraduate or graduate program Strong organizational skills and attention to detail Effective written and verbal communication skills Ability to interact professionally with the public Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines
Preferred Qualifications Graduate-level coursework or enrollment (preferred but not required) Interest in municipal government or local planning processes Familiarity with permitting, zoning, or development concepts (coursework acceptable) Experience in customer service or administrative support
