Description
Under the general supervision of the Maintenance Director, the City Inspector performs
administrative and technical activities relating to the regulations and inspection of public works
projects, public and private construction of infrastructure, and oversight of compliance of City
codes and standards within jobsites.
1. Conducts inspections of public works and private development projects, to ensure compliance with City codes, approved plans, and standard specifications.
2. Assists with daily oversight of construction activities, evaluating materials, workmanship and safety practices within City rights-of-way and easements.
3. Performs specialized inspections including Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPP), water quality protection, and final acceptance inspections for drainage, utilities, streets, and related infrastructure.
4. Assists in monitoring City construction projects by reviewing contractor schedules, tracking progress, identifying issues, and providing recommendations to project managers.
5. Assists with maintaining accurate project documentation for public and private development, including right-of-way permitted work and inspection records.
6. Coordinates activities in city rights-of-way, easements, and flood plains, and oversees work performed by contractors, utilities, and other stakeholders to protect public facilities.
7. Reviews and approves pay requests, traffic control plans, and related construction submittals.
8. Coordinates road closures, detours and traffic control needs with emergency services, City departments, contractors, and external agencies.
9. Attends, conducts, and participates in preconstruction meetings with staff, developers, engineers and contractors to ensure clear communication of City requirements.
10. Collaborates with other City departments, governmental agencies, and the private sector to ensure adherence to all applicable standards and specifications.
11. Responds to emergency call-outs for construction-related issues and assists in addressing immediate on-site needs.
12. Provides customer service by responding to and resolving public inquires, concerns, and complaints related to public works, development and utility projects.
13. Exercises immediate remedial action to correct any quality deficiencies that occur in areas of responsibility.
14. Ability to establish, maintain, and foster positive, professional and effective working relationships with those contacted during work.
15. Ability to maintain confidentiality.
16. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
1. Requires a High School Diploma or GED Equivalent, and at least 2 years of experience in construction, public works or other municipal departments, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
2. Must have completed the following within one year of employment: Texas Department of Transportation Local Government Project Procedures Course; VRX Institute Inspection of Embankment for Roadway Certification of Completion; and
Environmental Protection A- Construction General Permit Inspector Training Course.
3. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, City officials, and general public.
4. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
5. Valid Texas Driver’s License required.
PREFFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
1. Bachelor in the field of engineering, construction management, or related field.
2. Certifications related to construction inspection, stormwater compliance, traffic control, or public infrastructure.
3. Familiarity with Texas Department of Transportation specifications, municipal and construction best practices.
