Company History

The City of McLendon-Chisholm has a rich history dating back more than 170 years and was formed from the union of two early communities named after prominent landowning families in the area: the McLendon and Chisholm families. Early settlers established the foundations of these communities in the mid-1800s, and many of the family names from those early years remain connected to the area today, including those memorialized at the historic Chisholm Chapel Cemetery.

The McLendon community originated around 1870 when P. A. McLendon, a large landowner, built a store, cotton gin, and blacksmith shop that helped establish a thriving agricultural settlement supported by the region’s rich blackland soil. The area also included a church and school that served local families.

Nearby, the community of Chisholm developed after Enoch Parson Chisholm purchased land in the area in 1856. Chisholm was a farmer, landowner, and Methodist minister who organized the Chisholm Methodist Church in his home in 1871 and later helped establish a chapel and school for the growing community. The town of Chisholm was officially platted in 1886 and became an active rural settlement with businesses, a post office, and Berry Creek Academy, which at one time was the second-largest school in Rockwall County.

On October 18, 1969, residents of the two communities voted to incorporate and formally unite the areas as the City of McLendon-Chisholm. Since incorporation, the City has experienced steady growth as the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area has expanded eastward. Today, McLendon-Chisholm continues to grow while maintaining its small-town character, with new residential neighborhoods and businesses attracted by the community’s proximity to the Dallas–Fort Worth region and its strong quality of life.
