Company History
The Merkel Police Department was est. in 1906, originally as a the Merkel City Marshall's Office. As the City of Merkel grew, the Merkel Police Department was created and started with only two sworn officers. The Departments duty was and still remains to protect and serve the community of Merkel, Texas.
Merkel, Taylor County, Texas, the "Windmill City" is located in Northern Taylor County and neighbors Jones County to the north, and Nolan County, to the west. We are approximately 15 miles west of the City of Abilene, Texas, which is home to Dyess Air Force Base, home of the B-1 Bomber and future home of the B-21 Bombers.
Merkel is home of the Mighty Badger, Merkel Independent School District, which is well known for its extremely completive football and State ranked Girls Basketball. MISD is a 3A Division School with approximately 1,200 students.
The Merkel Police Department is currently operates with a staff of a Chief of Police, Lieutenant, SRO Sergeant, four police officers, and two school resource officers, and five reserve officers/investigators. Additionally we are staffed with a Code Enforcement Officer, Animal Control Officer and Administrative Clerk (Property and Evidence).
