POSITION OVERVIEW
Under the supervision of the Assistant Finance Director, performs accounting work in one or more of the following areas: recording transactions into the accounting system, review and posting of cash receipts into the general ledger, performing miscellaneous reconciliations and preparing accounting reports. Also ensures compliance with relevant laws and internal policies.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Prepares and posts journal entries in accordance with governmental accounting standards and GAAP, including posting daily activity in the City’s bank accounts and other routine transactions
- Responsibility over posting the City’s cash receipts into the City’s accounting software, including ensuring proper coding and posting dates of packets prepared by other departments, and preparation of the finance department’s cash receipt packets for posting
- Performs various reconciliations of the City’s invoices for payment, including vehicle leases and fuel bills
- Assists with completion of miscellaneous compliance reports, including 1099’s, sales tax returns and unclaimed property filings
- Performs various reconciliations of the city’s accounting records
- Assists with year-end audit requests
- Provides continuity of operations when needed to perform the essential duties of accounts payable, bank reconciliations, payroll, and month-end close
- Provides excellent customer service and maintains a positive working relationship with staff, co-workers, elected officials, supervisors, citizens, business, and community groups.
- Performs other duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of governmental accounting principles and practices;
- Prior experience using an ERP system
- Skill in Microsoft Office;
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills;
- Able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing;
- Able to work under pressure and prioritize tasks with frequent interruptions;
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with others;
- Maintain regular and punctual attendance.
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES & EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree in Accounting with a minimum of two (2) years of related experience in governmental accounting or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This position is primarily sedentary, requiring an individual to sit at a desk for long periods of time, working on a computer.
Must be able to lift up to 20 lbs.
