JOB SUMMARY: Under supervision, performs semi-skilled work in the operation of a variety of equipment, including lawn equipment, hand tools, trucks, dump trucks, roll-off, and tractors in the Public Works Department.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Performs a variety of Public Works Department equipment operation and manual labor tasks as assigned.
- Operates various equipment involved in the construction, repair, and maintenance of roads, including mowers, light tractors with attachments, dump trucks, front-end loaders, and other tools and equipment.
- Hauls materials, and transports vehicles and equipment to job sites using various trucks.
- Loads and unloads materials using power equipment.
- Performs skilled and semiskilled construction, maintenance, and labor work.
- Assists in resurfacing, oiling, patching, grading, and shaping roads.
- Operates power equipment to collect trash and refuse.
- Aids in emergency and storm related activities.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: No direct supervision exercised.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
High School diploma or equivalent, and one year of experience in manual labor, construction, or equivalent.
Knowledge of:
- City policies and procedures.
- Safety standards and practices for construction sites, roadways, and heavy equipment.
- Traffic laws and rules involved in vehicle and equipment operation, as well as traffic control and flagging procedures.
- Hazards and precautions in working around or near heavy equipment.
- Proper use and maintenance of power tools, hand tools, equipment, machinery, and vehicles.
- Safety standards and practices in hazardous traffic environments.
Skill in:
- Safe and efficient operation and maintenance of vehicles and equipment according to standard operating and safety procedures.
- Making routine operating adjustments and repairs to assigned equipment.
- Reading and understanding route maps and street signs.
- Operating maintenance equipment and equipment used in the assignment.
- Following and effectively communicating verbal and written instructions.
Special Requirements: Possess a Texas Class B Commercial Driver’s License or obtain it within six months of employment.
Physical Demands / Work Environment:
- Operate a motor vehicle safely.
- Ability to sit, stand, walk long distances, kneel, crouch, stoop, and squat.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds.
- Exposure to cold, heat, construction, roadway, and other outdoor hazards.
