JOB SUMMARY: This position performs the duties of an “Animal Control Officer” under Texas law, including enforcement of city ordinances in accordance with the law, protection of rights and property of citizens, participation in public affairs or educational programs designed to make known the animal laws and ordinances in the community. Maintains the care of animals, building, and grounds of animal shelter. This position may also help perform duties at the parks including but not limited to mowing, tree trimming, etc.
This is a non-exempt position and is eligible for overtime. Salary range is $35,000 -$40,000. Employee Benefits Include: Health and Term-life Insurance; retirement with Texas Municipal Retirement System; Paid holidays; and paid time off.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Patrols city streets, parks, commercial and residential areas and enforce animal ordinances.
- Transports captured animals to animal shelter; provides care for stray and nuisance animals at animal shelter; euthanizes animals within scope of authority.
- Investigate animal bites and arranges for quarantine
- Respond to calls for service; investigate animal calls, neglect, etc., and take appropriate actions
- Picks up dead animals and properly disposes of them
- Coordinates with rescue / rehab for young, injured, or sick wildlife
- Checks animals for rabies and prepares rabies specimens for shipment to laboratory. Notifies animal owner on receipt of test results. Euthanizes animals due to suffering conditions and participates in euthanasia laboratory providing euthanasia services on varying numbers of animals as needed
- Issues citations in accordance with departmental policies and procedures and effective techniques
- Prepares a variety of reports and records including but not limited to daily logs, investigation reports, field reports, etc.
- Testifies in court and communicates with other law enforcement personnel, city attorney, county prosecutors and district prosecutors as deemed necessary
- Render animal assistance as needed
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Clean Shelter and lift and move heavy objects/animals
- Ability to operate a city vehicle
- Ability to follow oral and written directions
- Ability to interpret and apply modern methods, laws, regulations, policies, and procedures relating to animal control
- Ability to make independent judgments
- Ability to respond to and apply established procedures in situations
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, supervisors, the public and other law enforcement agencies
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbal and in writing
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED
- Valid Class C Texas Driver’s License
- Ability to obtain Animal Control and Euthanasia Certifications within one year
- Good communication and customer service skills
- Must pass a background check, physical, and drug screen

The employee must have normal vision, hearing, and understandable articulation. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move objects outdoors during inclement weather conditions and in extreme hot and cold temperatures. The employee is occasionally exposed to personal risk while working in dangerous situations. The noise level of the work environment ranges from generally quiet to moderately loud.
Animal Control Officers typically work 8-hour shifts. Performs other duties as assigned.
