Description
Position Summary
Under general supervision, the Building Inspector performs technical inspections of residential,
commercial, and industrial construction to ensure compliance with adopted building codes, zoning
ordinances, safety regulations, and city standards. This position safeguards public health, safety,
and welfare through enforcement of construction and occupancy requirements.
Requirements
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Conducts inspections of new construction, remodels, additions, and repairs for compliance with
applicable building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, fire, and energy codes (as assigned).
Review permit applications, construction plans, and specifications for code compliance.
Inspect foundations, framing, roofing, electrical, mechanical, plumbing systems, and final
occupancy.
Issue correction notices, stop-work orders, and citations as necessary.
Provide technical guidance to contractors, developers, property owners, engineers, and the
general public.
Investigate code complaints and potential code violations.
Maintain accurate inspection records, reports, and files in permitting software.
Verify that unsafe or substandard conditions are corrected.
Assist during emergencies and natural disasters with damage assessments.
Participate in pre-construction meetings and development reviews as needed
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
High school diploma or equivalent.
Minimum of 2-5 years of experience in building inspection, construction, or related trade
experience.
Required state or ICC certifications in one or more disciplines (Building, Electrical, Plumbing,
Mechanical), or ability to obtain within a specified time.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of International Building Codes and related local amendments.
Knowledge of construction methods, materials, and safety practices.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, construction plans, and specifications.
Ability to enforce codes firmly, fairly, and tactfully.
Strong communication and customer service skills.
Ability to work independently in the field and make sound judgements.
Proficient with inspection software, mobile devices, and basic computer applications.
Ability to prepare clear and accurate written reports.
Bilingual skills are a plus.
Licenses & Certifications
Possession of valid driver’s license.
ICC Building Inspector Certification or State Inspector (required or obtainable within
probationary period).
A plumbing inspector’s license issued by the Texas State Borad of Plumbing Examiners or the
ability to obtain within one year of employment.
