Job Summary: The Building Official assists with the administration and operational oversight of the Compliance Department, including Permits/Inspections and Code Enforcement functions. This position is responsible for supporting the enforcement of municipal codes, ordinances, zoning regulations, and construction standards while ensuring permitting and inspection services are delivered in an efficient, compliant, and customer-focused manner.
The Building Official oversees daily operational activities related to permitting, inspections, plan review, and code compliance while assisting with staff supervision, customer service resolution, workflow coordination, and departmental process improvement efforts. This role collaborates with City departments, contractors, developers, and the public to support safe development, regulatory compliance, and service delivery throughout the community.
Essential Job Functions:
- Assist with overseeing daily operations of the Compliance Department, including permitting, inspections, plan review, and code enforcement activities to ensure operational efficiency, consistency, and regulatory compliance.
- Interpret and enforce applicable building codes, zoning regulations, municipal ordinances, and construction standards while reviewing permits, construction plans, inspection reports, and related technical documents.
- Coordinate and oversee residential, commercial, and multi-family inspection and compliance activities while working with contractors, developers, consultants, external agencies, and City departments.
- Supervise assigned staff by assigning work, providing training, monitoring performance, supporting employee development, and promoting accountability, operational consistency, and customer service.
- Assist with departmental administration, operational reporting, workflow improvements, permitting software systems, records management, budgeting support, and implementation of operational initiatives.
- Respond to customer concerns, complaints, disputes, and sensitive compliance matters while maintaining effective communication and professional working relationships with residents, business owners, contractors, and City personnel.
- Prepare reports, correspondence, inspection documentation, and operational records while assisting during emergency operations, disaster response activities, severe weather events, or other City operational needs as assigned.
- Perform other assignments, special projects, and related duties as required
Requirements
- Associate’s degree in Construction Management, Public Administration, Building Inspection Technology, Business Administration, or a closely related field
- Three (3) years of experience in building inspections, permitting, construction management, code enforcement, or building code compliance activities, including at least one (1) year of supervisory or lead experience.
- Required Certification/License:- ICC Combination Inspector Certification or equivalent ICC discipline certifications
Texas Plumbing Inspector's License - A valid Texas driver's license.
- Preferred Certifications: ICC Certified Building Official Certification
ICC Plans Examiner Certification - Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience that provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.
