Description
SUMMARY
Under general supervision of the Building Official, intakes and processes building permit applications, maintains permit databases to track information on permits, plan reviews, building inspections, and code enforcement complaints. Performs routine technical and customer service duties for the department.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Enters data to track information on permits, plan review, and building inspections.
- Assists applicants with forms and technical questions related to the building permit process.
- Tracks projects from initial application through issuance of Certificate of Occupancy.
- Maintains and updates revisions to forms and other informational materials with approved amendments to Codes of Ordinances. Provides notifications of revisions to builders, contractors, developers, engineers, and architects.
- Reviews, accepts, and processes permit applications, documents, assesses permitting fees, provides receipts for fees paid, provides change, may reconcile and close out cash drawer at close of business.
- Processes contractor registrations.
- Maintain, update, and review building permit software.
- Coordinates and routes information to appropriate city, county, and state agencies, including, but not limited to, applicants for Certificate of Occupancy, stop work notices, and lapsed permits.
- Provides technical assistance and training to staff in the use of computer software and databases and to customers in the use of online permitting through the website.
- Provides daily schedule of building inspections and code enforcement activities for the Building Inspector and Code Enforcement Officer.
- Serves as the backup for the front counter as needed; greets customers and answers questions; answers phones and directs calls.
- Maintains and updates department records, and files and complies with the Record Retention Schedule.
- Prepares reports and supporting documents to include spreadsheets, charts, and graphics.
- Supports he relationship between the City of Haslet and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and city staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and city information.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
- Work is typically performed in a standard office environment.
- Required to sit and use a keyboard for extended periods.
- Ability to lift or move objects up to 25 pounds.
Requirements
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
- Building codes
- Research methods to respond to building code inquiries.
- Recordkeeping principles and practices.
- Modern office equipment and procedures.
- Customer service principles and practices.
- Reviewing construction plans and applications for completeness and compliance.
- Providing effective customer service.
- Skill in resolving customer complaints and concerns.
- Prioritizing work activities and meeting work deadlines.
- Performing basic mathematical calculations.
- Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with other city staff, business owners, vendors, contractors, area cities, and the general public.
- Using a computer workstation and basic/advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND LICENSES / CERTIFICATIONS
- High School Diploma or GED
- Two years of construction permit or plan review experience.
- Must possess, or obtain within one (1) year of employment, the International Code Council (ICC) Permit Technician Certificate.
OR
- Any combination of related education and experience that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job. *
*Obtaining the ICC Permit Technician Certificate is required within one (1) year of employment.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Must pass pre-employment drug test.
- Must pass a driver's license check, criminal history background check, and social security number verification.
- Valid Texas Class C Driver's License required.
