SEASONAL WORK SCHEDULE: TBD June – August 2026 Monday - Friday 7:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

Join our team as a Summer Camp Counselor and help make a difference! The Saginaw Recreation and Community Services Department is running a nine-week indoor camp for children ages 5 to 11. As a Camp Counselor, you will lead activities, games, and crafts to give campers a fund experience, encourage new friendships, and keep them active. We are looking for people who are engaging, patient, creative, and enjoy working with kids. The camp runs from June to August, Monday through Friday,7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., work schedules include opening and closing shifts.
Job Summary:
Successful camp counselors exhibit characteristics of responsibility, dependability, leadership, patience, punctuality, hard work, sense of humor, self-control, integrity, common sense, good judgment and a positive enthusiastic attitude. Summer Camp counselors are responsible for the care and safety of participants (aged 5-11) in the summer camp program, including activity planning, implementation and supervision, facility preparation and consistently maintaining a safe environment. Ideal candidates are positive role models who enjoy working with children and are committed to supporting their growth and happiness, and to creating a space where every child can thrive.
The intent of this job description is to provide a representation summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed in this position. The camp counselor may not be required to perform all duties in this description and may be required to perform position-related tasks other than those specifically listed in this position.
Essential Functions:
- This role requires patience, good decision-making, clear communication, flexibility, and a positive attitude always.
- Counselors are expected to model appropriate behavior, language, and judgment always.
- Counselors support campers’ self-esteem by accepting everyone as they are, encouraging their efforts, and giving helpful, positive feedback when needed.
- Lead your group, be a good role model, mentor campers, set clear limits, and give support, encouragement, and helpful feedback to everyone in your group.
- Keep the camp safe and supportive, both physically and emotionally, by always setting clear expectations and supervising campers.
- Make sure campers behave well, practice good hygiene, dress properly, and are ready for all camp activities.
- Handle conflicts and misbehavior as they arise, and address problems as needed. Ask the Camp Director for help if you need support.
- Perform other duties as required, directed, or as situation dictate.

Requirements
Physical Requirements:
- The employee must have the physical ability to closely observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, and enforce safety regulations and emergency procedures.
- Physical ability to participate in and lead various activities.
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, run, grab, pull and push objects, squat down, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, jump, climb stairs, see and hear.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 35 pounds.
Qualifications:
- Must be 16 years of age at the time of hire.
- Previous experience working with the children, preferably in a group or camp setting, is preferred.
- CPR/First Aid certification is required before camp begins.
- Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrate creativity and the ability to motivate children is essential.
- Ability to participate in various sports and recreational activities.
- Ensure positive attitude, behavior, and interactions with campers and staff always.
- Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
- Ability to interact with families, the public and other staff members clearly and professionally.
- Regular attendance on scheduled workdays is required.
