The City of Crawford is seeking qualified applicants for the full-time position of Police Chief who is an experienced, forward-thinking law enforcement executive with a strong commitment to professional policing, community engagement, and organizational leadership. The Chief of Police serves as the City’s chief law enforcement officer and oversees the Police Department’s overall direction, administration, and performance. The Chief is expected to provide sound professional advice, exercise independent judgment, and implement City policies and strategic priorities in ways that reflect the City’s values and commitment to transparency, accountability, and service.
The Chief of Police is responsible for establishing the organizational vision, setting departmental priorities, and ensuring the effective delivery of police services across all functional areas. This includes oversight of operations, investigations, training, professional standards, budgeting, labor relations, and personnel development. The Chief fosters a positive organizational culture that emphasizes ethical leadership, continuous improvement, and employee engagement. Community presence and engagement are central expectations of the role. The Chief of Police is expected to be highly visible and accessible, actively involved throughout the community, and to build trust and strong working relationships with residents, businesses, schools, and regional partners. The successful candidate will value open communication and collaborative problem-solving. The Chief of Police must balance the expectations of modern policing with the needs and values of a diverse and growing community. Requirements
Bachelor Degree in Criminal Justice (preferred), Public Administration or related field (preferred). Master Peace Officer license from Texas Commission On Law Enforcement (TCOLE) Certification; ten (10) years as a paid, full-time Peace Officer; minimum five years of progressive supervisory experience (preferred); and/or any combination of education and experience that achieves the desired results will be considered; Must possess Texas Driver's License without restrictions, except “A”. Must be a U.S. Citizen.
Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, and equipment used in the building trades; ability to learn, interpret, and apply relevant codes, laws, policies, procedures, and regulations. Ability to read and interpret detailed plans and blueprints to determine compliance with City requirements.
Modern law enforcement principles, practices, procedures, and techniques of police administration, organization, and operation including technical and administrative phases of crime prevention and law enforcement, including investigation and identification, patrol, traffic control, records management, and care and custody of persons and property.
Be knowledgeable regarding applicable laws, ordinances, and regulations affecting the work of the Department.
Have operating knowledge of Windows operating software; Internet Explorer; Microsoft Excel spreadsheet software and Microsoft Word processing software.
Reasoning ability, to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Mathematical skills, able to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations; to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals in English. Ability to effectively present information in English and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
In accordance with established policies, practices, and procedures, officer will patrol by vehicle and on foot; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; maintain composure in stressful and/or dangerous situations; enforce laws and ordinances with tact, firmness, and impartiality; maintain order; prevent crime and make arrests. Other Requirements
Candidates for the position will be required to live within a twenty-minute response time from the city limits to be considered for employment.
