Location: City of Reno, TX (Parker County)
Department: Reno Police Department
Reports To: Mayor and City Council
Status: Full-Time, Exempt
Salary Range: $75,000 – $85,000
POSITION SUMMARY
The City of Reno (Parker County), TX is seeking a dedicated and community-focused Chief of Police to lead its law enforcement operations. Serving a growing population of approximately 3,500 residents, the Chief will oversee a department currently comprised of four sworn full-time officers, a reserve force, and a public safety officer. This role requires a "hands-on" leader who can balance administrative duties with active field presence in a rural, yet developing, Texas community.
Requirements
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
Departmental Leadership: Provide strategic direction and daily oversight for all sworn and reserve personnel.
Community-Oriented Policing: Foster strong relationships with Reno residents and business owners to maintain the city's high quality of life.
Administrative Management: Handle departmental budgeting, policy development, and compliance with state regulations.
Active Patrol & Response: Given the department's size, the Chief must be prepared to respond to calls for service, handle criminal complaints, and assist with traffic accidents.
Interagency Cooperation: Coordinate closely with the Parker County Sheriff’s Office and neighboring agencies for mutual aid and shared resources.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Certification: Must hold a current Texas Peace Officer License issued by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE).
Education: A Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, or a related field is preferred.
Experience: Minimum of 5–10 years of increasingly responsible law enforcement experience.
Previous supervisory or command-level experience is highly preferred.
License: Must possess a valid Texas Class C Driver’s License.
Background: Must pass a comprehensive background investigation, psychological exam, and drug screening.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Possession of a Motorcycle Instructing License is considered a plus.
Graduation from executive leadership programs (e.g., FBI National Academy, SMIP).
KEY SKILLS & ABILITIES
Small-Agency Expertise: Proficiency in managing the unique challenges of a small, rural municipal department.
Communication: Strong verbal and written skills for interacting with the City Council and the public.
Adaptability: Ability to transition quickly from administrative tasks to active field duty.
