The City of Round Rock is offering multiple internship opportunities across various departments this summer! Whether you’re passionate about communications, planning, finance, public works, recreation, or community engagement, we have a spot for you. This is your chance to gain real-world experience, work on projects that matter, and learn how local government operates all while building skills for your future career.
As a City intern, you’ll:
- Work on meaningful projects that impact the City, its residents, and other departments.
- Gain hands-on experience in your chosen field. No coffee runs here!
- Participate in public outreach and community programs as applicable.
- Support busy summer initiatives in your department.
- Collaborate with professionals who are eager to mentor and share their expertise.
- Special Projects: Each intern will complete a project that adds value to their department and builds their portfolio.
Professional Development
In addition to your department work, you’ll attend training sessions led by our Organizational Development Trainer to sharpen your professional skills; think leadership, communication, and career readiness.
Here are some of the exciting areas where you can make an impact:
Communications & Marketing: Assist with writing, social media, advertising, and website updates while creating visuals for campaigns.
Community & Neighborhood Services: Support the Tool Depot program and lead a city-wide neighborhood leader contact update project.
Finance: participate in the accounts payable, purchasing, general ledger, budget and internal audit functions.
General Services – Building Construction: Explore commercial construction or assist with project management tools and documentation.
General Services – Facility Maintenance: Help with preventive maintenance documentation, asset inventories, and project coordination.
General Services – Fleet: Provide administrative support for data entry, work orders, scheduling, inventory, and reporting.
Human Resources: Gain experience in recruitment, onboarding, benefits, and employee relations projects.
IT – GIS: Work on mapping projects, metadata generation, and digitization initiatives.
IT – Systems Operations: Audit badge readers and assist with infrastructure and security projects.
Library: Help launch the Pop-Library program and assist with outreach, programming, and delivery services.
Police Department – Civilian & Multimedia: Learn police operations, assist with multimedia projects, and complete a research or video-based final project.
Planning & Development Services: Assist implementing Round Rock 2030 policies through research, data analysis, land development code updates, public engagement, and creating reports and presentations. Prefer a student currently pursuing a graduate degree in planning or recent graduate from an accredited planning program.
Public Works – Environmental, Transportation, Water Conservation: Support environmental monitoring, inventory audits, transportation operations, and water conservation outreach.
Sports Management: Assist with planning, coordinating, and executing summer sports programs and camps.

Requirements
Who We’re Looking For
- Current college student or recent graduate (within 1 year).
- Minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Eager to learn and contribute in a team environment.
