Description
Under the general supervision of the Fire Chief and supervisors, the Firefighter/EMT performs a wide variety of technical tasks and functions in support of fire suppression, fire prevention, emergency medical services, rescue, and hazardous materials operations; participates in fire prevention programs and educates the public on fire prevention and safety; and performs other technical operations and activities in support of the Fire Department.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Respond to emergency calls related to fire suppression and emergency medical service and operations; provide appropriate services as required; prepare reports regarding emergency incidents as assigned;
- Maintain a state of readiness for emergency response; operate, inspect, repair, and perform other technical tasks related to the apparatus and equipment in the Fire Department;
- Perform search and rescue for trapped or injured persons; first aid and life support as necessary; operate numerous types of rescue, emergency, and fire suppression equipment as necessary;
- Perform emergency medical duties as designated by state health and regulatory agencies for an Emergency Medical Technician; stabilize acutely ill or injured persons, complete patient reports and other medical-related documentation;
- Participate in cleaning and maintaining station facilities, grounds, equipment, and apparatus; ensure that appropriate conditions are maintained at the Fire station, including a constant state of readiness for emergency calls;
- Participate in a variety of fire prevention operations, activities and programs including training, fire investigations, code enforcement and equipment operation and maintenance;
- Perform testing of fire hydrants and fire hoses; conduct residential fire safety inspections; perform pre-fire planning;
- Perform public relations on behalf of the Fire Department, including demonstration of fire equipment and apparatus and participation in other educational programs for various groups and the general public; may conduct tours of the station; may be required to instruct public fire prevention and fire safety.

Requirements
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Highly effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Knowledge and ability to apply correct business English, spelling, and arithmetic and compose sentences, paragraphs, and letters in an effective manner.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Limited travel; after-hours and weekend responsibilities may be required.
- Must intelligently read and write the English language.
- Must not have been discharged from any military service under less than honorable conditions.
- Must possess a current valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
- Have no felony convictions or a history of misdemeanor convictions that would indicate a habitual law violator.
- Be subjected to a search of records to disclose a criminal record.
- The applicant possesses 20/20 vision, either corrected or uncorrected, in each eye. Uncorrected vision cannot exceed 20/100 in each eye unless is corrected with contact lenses or prescription glasses that must be worn on duty or other activities.
- The applicant must be free of dichromatic color blindness, night blindness, and any other visual deficiencies or limitations.
- Be able to pass a validated physical ability test successfully.
- Be able to pass a post-offer physical, psychological, drug test, and polygraph.
- All candidates must pass a comprehensive background investigation.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
- Must be a U.S. citizen and at least 18 years of age.
- Must be a high school graduate, have passed general educational development (GED) test indicating high school graduation level, or have successfully completed 12 semester hours of college.
- Must hold TCFP Basic Structure Firefighter certification.
- Must hold TDSHS EMT Basic certification.
- Must possess a current valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE
- Bilingual
- Prior city/government experience
- One year of firefighting is preferred.
- NIMS-100, 200, 700, and 800
- Complete the Traffic Incident Management Program
- Possession of a Courage to be Safe certification
- Possession of a valid appropriate Texas Class B driver's license for the level of vehicles operated.
NOTE
Any work-related experience resulting in acceptable and proven proficiency levels in the above-required knowledge, skills, abilities, education, training, or licensing could be considered as a possible substitute for the above industry-specified training or experience requirements for this position.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Work a 48-96 shift schedule.
- Essential and other important duties require maintaining the physical condition necessary for adequate physical performance abilities, including moderate and heavy lifting; Bending, stooping, kneeling, crawling, and climbing; Ability to run, walk, stand, or sit for prolonged periods of time;
- The worker is required to have visual acuity to operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment. Standard visual acuity without correction, at least 20/40 in one eye and 20/100 in the other eye, and correctable to at least 20/20 and 20/40.
- Ability to operate motorized equipment and assigned vehicles;
- Adequate speech, hearing, and eyesight required;
- Strenuous and/ or heavy exertion factors are required to perform this job; and
- Maintain mental capacity that permits making sound judgments regarding work and have regular attendance.
- Very heavy work. Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects;
- Ability to work inside and outside, exposure to varying weather conditions (extreme heat, cold, temperature swings, rain, etc.), exposure to the sun, exposure to moving objects, operating assigned vehicles, movement on uneven terrain, and occasionally irregular work hours including weekend, holiday, evening hours and overtime, as needed; Work with frequent interruptions;
- Demonstrate patience and flexibility in changing job demands and when interacting with employees, visitors, and the public;
- May be required to work immediately before, during, or after an emergency or disaster.
- Ability to maintain emotional control under stress.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, run, crouch, bend, stoop, kneel and lift;
- Manipulate and perform good hand, eye, and foot coordination, mobility and dexterity;
- Maintain physical activity and mental alertness over prolonged periods of time;
- Maintain mental capacity that permits making sound judgments regarding work;
- Manipulate and load/unload heavy, carry, push, drag or hold heavy objects;
- Effectively communicate, both orally and in written form;
- Maintain effective working relationships and represent the City in a positive manner at all times while engaged with City staff and Citizenry.
- Skilled in communicating with the public as to quickly and accurately dispense information orally, in writing, and on the phone with City personnel and the public, at times under emotional stressful conditions;

- In the course of work the following will be physical requirements of the position. Climbing, ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs, and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized. In addition, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing and repetitive motion;
- Subject to hazards including a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to high heat or exposure to chemicals;
- Subject to atmospheric conditions. One or more of the following conditions that affect the respiratory system of the skin: fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases or poor ventilation;
- Required to function in arrow aisles or passageways;
- Required to work 48 hour shifts and up to 72 hours continuous shifts. During this time, you may experience several interruptions of sleep, meals and/or other activities.
- Expected to perform job functions despite the potential for fatigue resulting from extending shift work.
