OVERVIEW
The Firefighter/Paramedic is responsible for protecting life, property, and the environment through emergency response, fire suppression, medical care, hazard mitigation, and public education. This role requires a high level of readiness, integrity, and teamwork to meet the dynamic needs of the community.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Emergency Response:
Respond promptly to fire, medical, rescue, and hazardous materials emergencies. Deliver high-quality patient care, perform firefighting operations, conduct rescues, and assist in property preservation in accordance with department protocols. - Preparedness & Training:
Participate in ongoing training in firefighting tactics, emergency medical care, apparatus operations, physical fitness, and city infrastructure knowledge (streets, hydrants, target hazards, etc.). - Reporting & Documentation:
Accurately complete all required reports (patient care, incident, injury, payroll, etc.) by the end of each shift, ensuring compliance with departmental and regulatory standards. - Community Engagement:
Deliver fire and life safety education to schools, businesses, and community groups. Represent the department at public events and build trust with the public through positive interaction and visibility. - Inspections & Maintenance:
Assist with fire safety inspections, hydrant maintenance, and ensuring readiness of fire apparatus, tools, and equipment. Perform daily upkeep of facilities, grounds, and vehicles. - Support Operations:
Act in the role of Driver/Engineer as needed. Collaborate with your officer and crew to maintain operational readiness, perform preventive maintenance, and ensure efficient response capability. - Special Assignments:
Participate in special tasks and emergency deployments as assigned, including regional mutual aid, emergency management duties, or public safety initiatives.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Education & Certifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Certified Structural Firefighter (Texas Commission on Fire Protection)
- Paramedic certification (Texas Department of State Health Services or National Registry Licensed EMT-Paramedic)
- Valid Texas Class B Exempt Driver’s License
- Additional Certifications (Required Post-Hire):
- Within 2 years: Hazardous Materials Technician, TCFP Driver/Operator
- Within 3 years: Rope Rescue Technician, Swift Water Rescue Technician
- Skills & Attributes:
- Strong judgment and situational awareness
- Effective written and verbal communication
- Proficiency with basic computer applications and digital reporting
- Ethical, motivated, dependable, and service-oriented
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Perform strenuous physical tasks under challenging conditions, including:
- Lifting/moving objects up to 70 lbs regularly, and over 100 lbs occasionally
- Climbing ladders and operating in high places (above 50 ft)
- Working in confined spaces and at varying heights
- Wearing full protective gear and SCBA in hazardous environments
- Must maintain the physical stamina required for emergency operations and daily duties.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Work involves both indoor and outdoor environments, including extreme weather, noise, heat, and potential exposure to hazardous materials and contagious diseases.
- Regular exposure to stressful and emotionally demanding situations.
- Includes shift work, weekends, holidays, and overnight hours as part of a 48/96 schedule or assigned rotation.
