Description
The Town of Sunnyvale will be accepting applications for Firefighter/Paramedic. You must complete the full SFD Background Packet and Application. You must pass a physical agility test. It will be offered on 2 dates: Friday, November 7, 2025, and Saturday, November 8, 2025, beginning at 9:00 a.m. Check-in begin at 8:30 a.m. at Sunnyvale Fire Department Training Facility at 404 Tower Place, Sunnyvale, TX 75182. If an alternate testing date is needed, please contact the Sunnyvale Fire Department at 972-203-4194 to discuss alternate testing dates.
Under direct supervision, the Firefighter-Paramedic performs various skilled EMS, fire suppression, and prevention activities which are often performed under stressful conditions and may require strenuous physical and mental exertion.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS -- Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. This list is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and duties performed by incumbents of this class. Employees are required to be in attendance and prepared to begin work at their assigned work location on the specified days and hours. Factors such as regular attendance at the job are not routinely listed in job descriptions but are an essential function. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Responds to calls for service and emergency alarms, and performs fire suppression, rescue, and emergency medical duties as required to control emergency incidents; relays orders, instructions, and information on emergency actions, and follows orders under stressful conditions.
- Operates emergency, fire, rescue, medical, and life-saving tools, equipment, and vehicles; ventilates and enters burning structures to extinguish fires and rescue victims; mitigates hazards, emergency situations, and hazardous materials incidents; performs salvage and clean-up activities at fire and emergency scenes, assists and coordinates with law enforcement personnel and other responders as required.
Inspects and maintains Fire Department facilities, vehicles, equipment, apparatus, tools, supplies, and hydrants; inspects, tests, evaluates, and repairs equipment after use; notifies supervisors of equipment problems beyond the scope of authority or skills. - Inspects and maintains personal protective equipment and assures that all firefighting equipment is in a state of readiness and available for immediate use.
- The Firefighter will function as an EMT-Paramedic as required by the Town of Sunnyvale. Additional Paramedic responsibilities are outlined in the BioTel Clinical Practice Guidelines and Department Manual of Procedures.
- Performs station maintenance; maintains station living quarters in a clean and orderly condition; performs minor repairs inside and outside of facilities; recommends replacement supplies as needed to station officer.
- Learns Town geography, traffic patterns, streets, landmarks, building locations, and special hazards of designated facilities, to assure that firefighting activities are accomplished in a fast, effective and safe manner.
- Performs documentation and assists in the preparation and maintenance of required departmental records to include patient reports and fire incidents.
- Assists with inspection of buildings for fire hazards and compliance with fire prevention ordinances; may assist with fire investigations when requested by the fire investigator or the incident commander.
- Conducts public education sessions for a wide variety of audiences; participates in fire prevention, pre-fire planning, and safety programs; assists with training of citizens ff as assigned.
- Attends training programs to continuously update work skills and knowledge.
- Steps up as Driver-Engineer and performs responsibilities of Driver-Engineer when absences occur.
- Performs other duties as assigned or required.
Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High School Diploma or equivalent LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS Paramedic (EMT-P) Certification from the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) or National Registry certification and capable of getting DSHS certification upon hire. Certification for Firefighters from the Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) or able to obtain upon hire highly preferred. Must possess a valid Class B Exempt Driver's License or be able to acquire one within six months of hire. All licenses and certifications must remain current and valid at all times. Knowledge of: Methods of firefighting, fire prevention, emergency medical practices, and arson investigation. Applicable local, State, and Federal laws, codes, regulations, and ordinances. Leadership and personnel management practices. Problem solving methods. Work safety practices, procedures, and protocols. Skill in: Observing and following safe firefighting practices. Following orders under stressful conditions. Recognizing the construction, contents and occupancy of buildings in order to apply appropriate basic firefighting techniques. Assessing complex emergency medical situations, stabilizing patients, and providing advanced emergency medical care. Performing maintenance and repair of firefighting vehicles, facilities and equipment. Maintaining physical condition required for the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities. Operating and maintaining computer and communications equipment. Effective communication, both verbal and written. Communicating orally with customers, clients, or the public in various settings. Assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects, and demands. Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with internal and external customers.
Special Requirements:
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS, PHYSICAL DEMANDS, and WORKING ENVIRONMENT Candidates must not have any of the medical conditions in National Fire Protection Association (NFPA 1582) Standard on Comprehensive Occupation Medical Program for Fire Departments, Chapter 6 which prevents the performance of job functions. Drug usage may be a disqualification, depending on the substance used and frequency of use. Candidates must be mentally alert, able to make quick decisions, exercise good judgement, get along well with others, have a willingness to perform assigned duties and responsibilities, be conscientious and dependable and in excellent physical condition. Must be able to work indoors, outdoors, underground, in trenches, on ladders, on level, slippery, sloping, unstable and muddy terrain, under constant noisy conditions, and in all types of weather. Must be able to maintain a 48 to 96 hour work schedule with additional hours as required with or without notice.
