The Lead Lifeguard is responsible for the safety and satisfaction of pool patrons through quality customer service, enforcement of pool rules and regulations, and assistance with general pool maintenance. They oversee and participate in the provision of lifeguarding services at the City aquatics facility and related work, both apparent and assigned. The work consists of related supervisory and lifeguarding duties. Work under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Skills in Customer Service, public relations and problem solving are key components to success in this position. The need to respond to emergency incidents contributes to the complexity of the position. Success in this position contributes to the safety of patrons. This is a seasonal position with no benefits.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
Receives direction from the Pool Supervisor and the Director of Parks and Recreation.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties listed below represent the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them if the work is related or a logical assignment to this class.
- Responsible for the safety and satisfaction of pool patrons.
- Knowledge of proper emergency procedures and implementing these procedures at all times.
- Provides emergency assistance such as rescue or first aid as needed in and around pool.
- Adhere to risk management and safety practices as outlined by the City.
- Enforce pool rules and regulations.
- Maintain order and discipline among all participants to ensure the comfort of others.
- Keep all lifesaving, first aid, and swimming equipment in good repair.
- Be ready to use equipment and have knowledge of proper use.
- Performing and overseeing daily custodial and maintenance duties to ensure a safe, clean aquatic facility.
- Provide excellent customer service.
- Supervise pool and lifeguards properly.
- Assists with clerical duties as needed.
- Assist with pool/staff scheduling as needed.
- Train lifeguards effectively on a regular basis.
- Other duties as assigned.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
Knowledge of:
- Operations, services and activities of a swimming pool.
- Occupational hazards and applicable safety precautions.
- CPR and general life saving techniques
- English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.
- Pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations.
Ability to:
- Accurately use life preserving equipment
- Handle and balance a cash drawer
- Interpret and apply Federal, State and local policies, laws, and regulations.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Work flexible schedule, Tuesday through Sunday.
- Work independently in the absence of supervision.
- Follow all safety rules and regulations of the Parks and Recreation department.
- Interpret, explain, and enforce City and departmental policies and procedures.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Lead and motivate others.
Requirements
Education, Training and Experience:
- High School Diploma or GED.
- At least one (1) year of lifeguard experience is required.
- Supervisory experience is preferred.
Licenses and Certificates:
- Possession of the following valid and appropriate certifications prior to appointment:
- Red Cross or equivalent Lifeguard
- CPR/First Aid
- AED
- Lifeguard Training Instructor (LGI) Certification

WORKING CONDITIONS
Outdoor environment with exposure to extreme temperatures, mechanical, chemical, and electrical hazards.
Physical Conditions:
