- Library Assistant
Description
This position provides extensive customer service to the general public, in person and on the phone. Performs a variety of multi tasking duties related to the daily operation of the Library circulation desk. This position reports to the Library Director, and may direct volunteers and program personnel as assigned.
Works closely with local schools, organizations and clubs; the media, other libraries and the public.
Will work approximately 19 hours per week.
Examples of work:
Assists with the daily tasks of the library such as issuing new library cards, checking out library materials, receiving returns, shelving and shelf reading, collecting payment for late charges or printing and faxing services.
Creates library programs for both adults and children.
Designs and implements library book displays.
Maintains daily circulation statistics.
Participates in professional meetings and workshops; attends library board meetings as required.
Provides light reference duties and assists patrons in the use of electronic resources.
Aids in the use of public computers and patron owned personal devices when applicable.
Other Important Duties:
Troubleshoot/repair computers.
Performs such other other duties as may be assigned.
Requirements
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of: modern library principles, methods and procedures; basic library reference materials and procedures; local reader interests, books and authors.
Skills in: operating a computer and standard office equipment.
Ability to: work well with adults and children; train library volunteers; demonstrate proficiency in both oral and written communication; establish and maintain effective working relationships with organizations, schools, employees, and the general public.
Knowledge of the following computer programs preferred: Microsoft Office products and Apollo ILS.
Acceptable experience and training:
Associate degree with 3 years experience in a library environment or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Certificates and licenses required:
Must have a valid TX Drivers License with good driving record.
Must be able to pass criminal history background check and pre-employment drug screening.
