Job Summary
Under general supervision, the Lifeguard is responsible for the supervision of pool patrons while preventing, identifying, and responding to aquatic emergencies. Lifeguards must be punctual, fair, consistent, knowledgeable and professional and must be able to visually scan all pool areas, identify distressed swimmers or customers, perform in-water rescues and assist when necessary, complete CPR when appropriate and provide first aid care to patrons. Other duties may include but are not limited to: maintaining pool operations and equipment, assisting with the guard shack, snack shack and bathroom maintenance and interacting with City employees and citizens.
The intent of this job description is to provide a representation summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed in this position. The position of lifeguard may not be required to perform all duties in this description and may be required to perform position-related tasks other than those specifically listed in this position.
Essential Job Functions:
Responsible for the supervision of pool patrons, rescuing victims and administering lifesaving care when needed.
Provides customer service assistance to ensure positive public relations, resolve patron concerns, and meet patron needs.
Follows and enforces appropriate safety and security precautions to safeguard all City assets (human, environmental, and financial).
Responsible for carrying out Facility’s Emergency Action Plan and assisting in maintaining a safe and clean facility.
Respect and follow the “chain of command” and attends all mandatory weekly in-service training.
Perform other duties as required, directed, or as situation dictate.

Must have excellent leadership, organizational and communicative skills, both oral and written.
Ability to maintain an effective and pleasant working relationship with citizens, the general public, and other team members.
Must have the ability to work various hours, including evenings, weekends and holidays as required.
Always maintain a professional appearance by adhering to the uniform standards. This includes wearing your swimsuit, guard shirt, whistle, and practicing good personal hygiene while on duty.
Ability to maintain confidentiality, maintain regular and consistent attendance, and maintain emotional control under stress.
Critical thinking and decision-making skills, to assess a situation and make an informed decision as a team or independently.
Ability to document any incidents and/or injuries.
Ability to enforce facility rules and regulations in a professional and consistent manner.
Adhere to all Saginaw Aquatic Center and Personnel policies, procedures, and safety protocols
Requirements
Physical Demands:
Ability to react to emergency situations by quick movements, strenuous activity, and on occasion assist or lift people in distress of varying weights.
Required to remain alert to dangerous situations while sitting, standing or walking for various lengths of time.
Must be able to do hard physical activities like running, kneeling, bending, twisting, dragging, pushing, and lifting pool deck furniture up to 35 pounds.
Exposed to an outdoor environment, subject to extreme temperatures and inclement weather.
Must be mentally and physically fit.
Qualifications:
Must be 16 years of age upon hire date.
Lifeguard Certification required.
Strong swimming skills.
Ability to communicate effectively and work well with a wide variety of people is required.
Ability to administer first aid as needed.
Ability to talk, see, hear, and read, to work in adverse environmental conditions.
