POSITION TITLE: Museum Director
DEPARTMENT: Museum
RATE CLASS: Salary
REPORTS TO: City Manager
SHIFT: 8:30am-5:30pm Monday-Friday, occasional after hours or weekends may be required for events
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: High School Diploma or GED. At least 3 years supervisory experience in managing Public Attraction, Exhibit Hall, Historic Sites, or Museums. Valid Texas Driver's License is required.
JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for general business administration operations of the Historical Museum and requires the use of judgment, initiative, and discretion.
SPECIAL SKILLS: Requires thorough understanding of museum operations and customer service experience. Good communication skills are required to facilitate positive community relations. Requires excellent interpersonal skills to interact effectively with the general public, Museum employees, Board, and staff members of all departments. Requires computer, word processing, spreadsheet, and typing skills.
DUTIES & RESPOSIBILITIES:
- Coordinate with Main Street Coordinator for meetings of the Historical Commission and Main Street Advisory Board.
- Responsible for general daily operations of the historical museum.
- Requires dependability, organizational skills, flexibility, and service-orientation.
- Collecting and accounting for receipts from admissions, donations, events.
- Develop and operate events and exhibits for the community consistent with the mission of the museum.
- Serve as Curator over the museum and its artifacts and products, including inventory control.
- Facilitate positive relationships with neighboring museums, heritage organizations, and state-wide institutions.
- Work with industry leaders and local organizations to obtain sponsorships for museum events and improvements.
- Identify, apply, and secure Grants for museum exhibits, events, and museum improvements.
- Supervises the hiring and management of personnel and duties; promoting a team-based atmosphere.
- Create, maintain, and carry-out Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Represents the museum in the community for all public programming, related partnerships, and community engagement.
- Develop and implement an emergency/natural disaster preparedness plan with Fire & Police Department.
- Process purchase orders and balance credit card statement.
- Work with and Assist the City Manager with budget and strategic plan preparations.
- Resolving visitor's problems and/or complaints.
- Lead collaboration with Programs Coordinator to schedule and coordinate seasonal activities and exhibits.
- Collaborate with staff to produce brochures, flyers and other marketing materials to promote public participation in scheduled program activities.
- Use of social media marketing to promote the museum, special exhibits, and events.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule when needed for events, etc.
- Must have good comprehension and communication skills, be a quick learner, and apply learned skills to the task at hand.
- Requires a self-starting individual who can propose and initiate needed work without direction.
- Show initiative and see that routine as well as special projects are completed in a timely, effective manner without continuous prompting.
- Perform other related duties as assigned and/or required.
OTHER DUTIES: This job description is intended to describe the general nature of work performed by the Museum Director and is not intended to be all-inclusive. All employees are expected to perform tasks as assigned by their supervisor; furthermore, working hours may be extended in times of necessity.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
Physical: Employee is required to sit, walk, frequently carry objects, occasionally may need to move department equipment or supplies in excess of 50 pounds.
Mental: Must be able to work in a pressure environment, handling many work assignments at the same time. Job will require judgment decisions in prioritizing work assignments and personnel. In addition, the Museum Director must be able to maintain good employee relations and good community relations when dealing with irate or unhappy citizens acting in a professional manner.
All municipal employees will be expected to show and maintain a high level of initiative, enthusiasm, and motivation towards the improvement of ALL aspects of the Freeport community. Employees will also be expected to be available for work, to report to work in a dependable and timely fashion, and to be physically and mentally fit to do their assigned work.
- Must pass a drug analysis test, physical exam, and successfully complete a background check.
