COMPENSATION: $20.30 - 24.87/hour, DOQ.
(full range: $20.30 - 29.44/hr)
FUTURE POSSIBLE COMPENSATION: Historically, the City of Roanoke has granted a 4% base pay increase to employees that successfully complete their probationary process. For example: an employee earning $20.30/hr would move to a rate of $21.11/hr if they successfully complete their 6-month probationary period.
SCHEDULE: 7:00am - 4:30pm, Mon. - Thurs., 7:00am - 11:00am Fri.

POSITION SUMMARY:
Under general supervision by the Crew Leader, the Parks Maintenance Worker I performs various routine and repetitive tasks to clean and maintain the City’s athletic facilities, park areas, and community facilities for visitor use, special events, and other designated functions.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Maintain, repair, clean, and prepare City athletic facilities, park areas, and community facilities.
- Perform routine and repetitive physical strenuous tasks including, but not limited to: mowing; edging and weed trimming; minor irrigation system maintenance; cleaning, minor repair, and maintenance of bathrooms; emptying of refuse containers; and removing trash and debris.
- Operate specialized equipment such as power mowers, edge and weed trimmers, pole and chain saws, hedge trimmers, and other equipment necessary for park maintenance.
- Assist with installation, maintenance, and replacement various park amenities such as fences, water fountains, benches, tables, signage, fixtures, grills, etc.
- Conduct daily inspections and preventative maintenance measures of vehicles, equipment, and tools including, but not limited to: washing, checking safe and proper operation, and servicing; checking fluid levels, lubrication, tire pressure check, cleaning filters and screens, cleaning of wind shields; insure road worthiness by checking the operation and presence of all lights, horns, braking systems, wipers, road hazard equipment, securing loads and other items required by the Dept. of Transportation before allowing equipment onto public roads.
- Participate in maintaining horticulture and/or arboriculture areas such as planting flowerbeds as well as removing, topping, pruning and trimming of trees and shrubs.
- Safely operate and maintain equipment, such as mowers, tractors, line trimmers, tillers, and various hand tools used in the maintenance of lawns, athletic fields, landscaping, etc.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
- Regular, reliable, and punctual attendance is required.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, overtime, and some holidays as needed.
- Demonstrate a willingness to expand knowledge and skills of the care, development, and maintenance of plants and trees in an urban setting.
- Maintains a high standard of customer service and a professional attitude with all internal and external customers.
Requirements
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating procedures, application instructions, etc. Ability to write routine reports and successfully complete work orders. Ability to follow oral or written instructions.
- Ability to safely operate or use equipment, tools, and cleaning supplies for the assigned duties. Ability to use a variety of hand and power tools, as well as various types of landscaping equipment.
- Ability to utilize strong attention to detail.
- Knowledge of maintenance and repair methods.
- Knowledge of basic landscaping and horticulture techniques.
- Ability to work and contribute in a team environment and treat co-workers and customers with respect. Ability to maintain effective working relationships.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- A minimum of six (6) months of related experience in performing landscape maintenance duties requiring the use of equipment similar to or the same as those assigned to this position.
- Must have valid Texas Driver’s license prior to employment and a good driving record.
- Must pass a pre-employment screening, background check and employment eligibility verification.
