Description
General Purpose:
Under general supervision, patrol and provide enforcement, detection and crime prevention under the laws of the City, State, and United States. Carry out special assignments in the field of police work; do related work as required; provide reports of assignments and/or related work as needed. Work may occasionally involve an element of personal danger and employees must be able to act without direct supervision and to exercise independent discretion in meeting emergencies.
Examples of Duties:
- Patrols a designated area of the city in a radio-equipped car
- Responds to and disposes of complaints involving drunkenness, fights, family disturbances, robberies, murders, fires, automobile accidents, and any other disturbance that threatens public safety
- Responds to radio and maintains radio contact with dispatchers
- Serves criminal processes, including warrants and subpoenas
- Testifies in court
- Occasionally may perform investigations while in plain clothes
- Serves as escort and transfers prisoners
- Escorts funeral processions
- Performs related work as required
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS
- Reports to: Patrol Sergeant
- Other: Works closely with the Chief, Captain, Lieutenant, and other Patrol Officers
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of modern police methods, procedures, and objectives; ability to observe situations analytically and objectively and to report and record these calmly in emergencies; ability to deal courteously but firmly with the general public; ability to understand and to carry out oral and written instructions; skills in the use of handguns, nightsticks, radio equipment; skill in the operation of motor vehicles. Good driving record required.
TRAINING – High school graduate or GED. Applicants currently licensed by Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officers Standards and Education meeting state licensing at time of employment. Applicants whom are not licensed by Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officers Standards and Education will be considered for employment as a police cadet. The applicant must complete the cadet program within six months from hire date.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Enforce appropriate City Ordinances, State and Federal laws, all written directives. Make ethical decisions that conform to applicable laws, department policy, regulations, etc. without supervision when appropriate. Work well with the public and coworkers daily, communicating effectively (verbally and written in person and in use of radio and telephone), maintaining alertness (for long periods, over 24 hours, in emergency situations); composure, helpful attitude and professionalism in all circumstances, including stress, verbal abuse, criticism, and/or other adverse condition with persons of diverse backgrounds, without bias or prejudice. Work any day of the week, any hour of the day, and extra assignments as needed (arrive on time). Attends all courts as scheduled or requested. Verbally articulate testimony in court. Obtain useful information during interviews and interrogations and develop accurate and thorough reports. Follow chain of command and instructions, receptive to supervision. Immediately comprehend and execute orders from supervision in emergency situations. Begin and seek out work without supervision; follow through on assignments in a timely manner. Recognize the need for supervisory intervention and seek it when needed; keep supervisor informed of relevant activity. Recognize, identify, and preserve crime scenes; conduct accurate, thorough, and complete investigations. Load and unload police equipment from a vehicle, including lifting objects over 15 pounds from trunk, back seat, etc. Maintain minimum proficiency according to T.C.L.O.S.E. and Department Standard with pistol, shotgun and rifle. Shoot a pistol, rifle, or shotgun; discharge tear gas canisters. Demonstrate competent weapons proficiency. Clean and maintain duty weapon. Use a baton to control hostile subjects. Perform defensive and/or other hand-to-hand combat. Display proficiency in officer survival and safety tactics. Physically restrain individuals or break up fights in the following circumstances; mutual combat, pushing or shoving (crowd control), those under the influence of hallucinogens or other behavior-altering drugs, those suffering from psychosis or other violent mental disorders. Use arm lock/wristlock. Wrestle with hostile subjects, carry or drag. Physically hold unwilling subjects until help arrives. Apply handcuffs to unwilling subjects. Physically assist drunks in walking and entering police car. Search persons/vehicles for weapons, evidence, and contraband. Search buildings and other structures in dark or low-light conditions using forced entry techniques if necessary; crawl through windows, climb ladders, walk on rooftops; work in confining areas. Conduct foot patrol/walk long distances (over 100 yards) over adverse terrain, rugged fields, alley ways, over fences, run up and down stairs. Knowledge and ability to provide CPR/first aid, assist emergency medical service in carrying victims in adverse conditions and terrain. Direct or control traffic with a flashlight or hand signals for more than one hour at a time. Stand on hard surfaces for long periods of time (over 1 hour) performing guard/security duties. Operate and maintain departmental equipment safely and properly (office, vehicle and personal protection). Drive safely under adverse weather conditions, during high-speed pursuit and for long periods. Accurately and effectively conduct vehicle accident investigations. Fight vehicle fires. Observe gruesome sights i.e. deceased persons, battered persons, without losing composure. Maintain an acceptable physical fitness level, including visual acuity correctable to 20/20 without color blindness, have normal hearing range. Maintain appropriate uniform and acceptable personal hygiene. Carry/wear appropriate extra equipment other than a gun belt, i.e. bulletproof vest, shot gun, etc. Maintain work area neatly, safely, and in organized fashion. Display self confidence and authoritative manner with conduct reflecting favorable on the Department. Must not pose a threat to the health and safety of self or others.
