- Permit Technician I/II
Description
Permit Technician I/II accepts and processes online and walk-in applications for building permits; assists with the assignment and tracking of code enforcement cases; manages the scheduling of building and code enforcement inspections; answers phone calls and walk-in customer questions regarding the building permitting, inspections and code enforcement processes.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:
- Reports to Assistant Director of Development Services or designee.
- This is a non-supervisory position
- Works closely with City personnel, has frequent contact with representatives of various governmental, business entities, building trades, and the general public.

- Processes building permits; code enforcement cases and scheduling inspections.
- Answers phone, email and walk-in customer questions regarding building permitting, inspections and code enforcement processes.
- Provides quality customer service to the customers of the department, other city staff and all other work contacts.
- Serves as Notary Public.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Requirements
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of:
- Standard office procedures
- General understanding of municipal government
- Building permitting and code enforcement
- Building construction
- Basic accounting and payment processing procedures
Ability to:
- Enter data accurately and consistently using standard software.
- Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing and in a timely manner.
- Assess and understand a variety of different situations and implement the appropriate next steps in handling customer complaints and/or requests.
- Be a team player and establish effective working relations with co-workers.
- Deal effectively with the public, including difficult or sensitive situations.
- Follow written and verbal instructions.
- Operate multi-line phone system.
- Operate using effective time management techniques and handle multiple tasks in quick succession.
- Read and comprehend city code, ordinances, manuals, memos, letters and interpret technical drawings.
- Process and reconcile payments.
- Use permit tracking software to manage building permits, code enforcement cases and inspections.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
- High school diploma or equivalent; and
- At least one year of municipal permit clerk, technician experience or building construction experience, or equivalent; OR
- Any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
CERTIFICATES/LICENSES REQUIRED:
CERTIFICATES/LICENCES DESIRED:
- Valid Texas Class C Driver’s License;
- Notary Public Certification or ability to obtain within 12 months.
- ICC Permit Technician certification or ability to obtain within 6 months.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred.
**Applicants with two years of municipal permit clerk/technician experience or building construction experience with a current ICC Permit Technician Certification will be considered for Permit Technician II**
