Description
JOB SUMMARY:
Under general supervision, the Permit Technician performs a variety of administrative duties requiring knowledge of policies and procedures related to building permits, inspections, zoning, and economic development.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Maintains thorough knowledge of department operations to better assist residents, business owners, property owners, contractors, developers, surveyors, engineers, architects, etc., with the development process through phone, email, and face-to-face interactions at the permit counter.
- Processes building permits, certificates of occupancy, contractor registrations, and health licenses; performs initial review for completeness of applications; reviews and approves minor permits.
- Provides technological direction and support to individuals using the project submission portal; schedules inspections as needed.
- Compiles monthly reports; routes calls, visitors, and mail to appropriate staff; maintains files.
- Works closely and effectively with coworkers; delivers friendly and consistent customer service to the public and City staff.
- Reconciles collected fees daily with the Finance Department.
- Performs other related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Must have proficient computer skills and knowledge of various computer programs.
- Must have excellent oral and written communication skills (grammar & spelling) and exhibit exceptional customer service with the general public and other city departments.
- Ability to make decisions in accordance with department policies and procedures, and have knowledge of general office procedures and work methods.
- Must be organized and able to keep track of a variety of development projects.
- Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
- ICC Permit Technician Certification preferred.
Requirements
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
High school diploma or equivalent plus a minimum of two (2) years of experience performing administrative, clerical, or office-related duties. An equivalent combination of education or experience may be considered. Must possess a valid Texas driver’s license with a good driving record.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Sitting, walking, and standing, some pushing/pulling, lifting and carrying up to 35 pounds; grip 45 pounds; repetitive movement of wrist and fingers during computer data input; reaching; 50-100% of day using computer; bending, squatting, kneeling, stair climbing, reaching, fine motor manipulation. Maintains static posture during sitting. Works indoors in a controlled environment 80% of the time, but may perform some functions outdoors for special events.
Pre-employment screening includes, but is not limited to, Drug Screen, Physical Examination, Credit Check, Motor Vehicle Review, and applicable Background Checks.
