Job Summary
Under general direction, is responsible for the planning and conducting of media and community relations programs designed to create and maintain a favorable public image of the City through various communications media. Working conditions are primarily in an office environment. Exercises functional supervision over assigned staff.
This position is an "unclassified" position and has no disciplinary appeal rights to the Municipal Civil Service Commission. This position is likewise subject to at-will employment status and can be terminated at any time for any reason.

7:45 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday - Friday
Essential Job Functions
--Develops, administers, and coordinates public relations and advertising programs related to the City of San Antonio.
--Develops executive summaries of studies for distribution to the public and the media.
--Arranges press conferences.
--Develops programs of public tours of City facilities.
--Prepares literature and brochures on the City of San Antonio, assigned department, and related developments and functions.
--Attends public meetings to obtain and impart necessary information concerning assigned department.
--Promotes goodwill through such publicity efforts as speeches, exhibits, films, tours, and question/answer sessions.
--May prepare written proposals to foundations, corporations, and private individuals for capital improvement projects.
--Prepares and implements promotional programs involving the news media in departmental programs.
--Coordinates all aspects of City ceremonial events, facility grand openings, and dedications.
--May prepare a marketing plan and budget for the Division, including monitoring of expenditures.
--Manages the production of various publications utilized to promote the department and the City (i.e., travel update, convention update, industry review, annual calendar) and researches leads and story ideas.
--Supervises the maintenance of various resource files, mailing lists, and statistical data on the department.
--Works with other City departments and local groups in activities related to the City of San Antonio and assigned department.
--Makes sales calls on media to place articles on San Antonio and may involve traveling to other cities.
--Supervises and edits publications aimed at various markets.
--May compile statistical reports for the Commission.
--Edits press releases.
--Represents the department during community projects and at public, social, and business gatherings.
--Facilitates access to the site and flow of information for the media in the event of an emergency.
--May supervise assigned staff.
--Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.
Requirements
Job Requirements
--Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university.
--Four (4) years of experience in journalism. Experience in public relations and bilingual (Spanish) skills highly desirable.
--Valid Class "C" Texas Driver's License.
Preferred Qualifications
--Experience with internal communications.
--Experience responding to media inquiries.
--Experience requesting or facilitating government open records documents.
--Experience with website and social media management and analytics.
--Experience working for or with a government agency.
--Experience managing special programs and pilots.
--Video recording and editing experience.
--Maintain professional communications with customers in person and via other media.
--Excellent time management and organizational skills, capable of multitasking and meeting deadlines.
--Collaborative team player with a positive attitude and willingness to learn.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
--Knowledge of hospitality industry and its market in San Antonio.
--Knowledge of journalism, printing processes, photography, and graphics.
--Knowledge of fundraising techniques and methods.
--Knowledge of advertising, marketing, and promotional strategies and objectives.
--Knowledge of all aspects of government, the community, attractions, hotels, civic organizations, art groups, etc.
--Knowledge of budget administration.
--Ability to operate a computer keyboard and other basic office equipment.
--Skill in operating a System 36 keyboard.
--Ability to communicate effectively.
--Ability to work with print and electronic media.
--Ability to prepare proposals and statistical reports.
--Ability to establish effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and the general public.
--Ability to travel out of town to make sales calls on media.
--Ability to perform all the physical requirements of the position, with or without accommodations.
