JOB SUMMARY:

Under general supervision, the Public Service Officer provides general support services to the Police Department, including limited supervision and maintenance of jail operations and record-keeping functions.  

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Provides limited supervision and maintenance of jail operations to include, but not limited to, maintaining security in the jail, fingerprinting, photographing, transferring, directing the activity of, and attending to the personal needs of prisoners. 
• Responsible for meeting and communicating with the general public, in person and by telephone.  
• Responsible for entering and retrieving data from the computer system, completing various reports, maintaining the jail log, receiving money, completing required paperwork, and other related record-keeping functions.
• Processes and searches incoming prisoners and assists with arraignments.
• Drives vehicles and operates equipment as required.  Performs general housekeeping duties and other job-related duties as assigned. 

Requirements

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

-        Ability to work shifts and be available for emergency call-out 24 hours a day. 

-        Ability to write, speak, and understand the English language.

-        Ability to perform all duties under stressful conditions. 

-        Ability to pass a physical fitness assessment and be able to lift moderately heavy objects.

-        Ability to pass a polygraph examination.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

High School diploma or equivalent is required. Must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid driver’s license with a good driving record. Must have no prior convictions of any felony or misdemeanor of grade A or B.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Sitting, walking, and standing, some pushing/pulling, lifting and carrying up to 20 pounds; grip 15 pounds; repetitive movement of wrist and fingers during computer data input; reaching; 50-100% of day using computer; bending, squatting, kneeling, stair climbing, reaching, fine motor manipulation. Maintains static posture during sitting. 50% of time spent sitting, 50% of time spent standing, walking, driving, carrying, and in prisoner restraint. Performs general light housekeeping duties. Restrains prisoners with safety considerations. The job is performed mainly working indoors in a controlled environment.

Pre-employment screening includes, but is not limited to, Drug Screen, Physical Examination, Credit Check, Motor Vehicle Review, Polygraph, and applicable Background Checks to include a CJIS Background Check.
