Position Summary
The City of Cockrell Hill is seeking a dependable and hardworking Public Works Laborer to assist with a variety of municipal maintenance and utility duties. This position supports the daily operations of the Public Works Department, including water, wastewater, streets, parks, facilities, grounds, events, and other general maintenance activities.
Because the City is a small municipality, Public Works employees may assist in multiple areas and must be willing to learn and help where needed. Duties may vary based on department needs, emergencies, weather conditions, special events, and the employee’s training and experience.
Requirements
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Read and re-read water meters; assist with service orders, meter repairs, meter replacements, and water service connections.
- Assist with water distribution and wastewater collection system maintenance, including water leaks, water main breaks, sewer backups, sewer lines, and related repairs.
- Help locate water and sewer lines and assist with repairs or installation of utility mains and services.
- Respond to citizen inquiries, service requests, and complaints in a professional and courteous manner.
- Perform general maintenance of streets, alleys, sidewalks, rights-of-way, drainage areas, and public property.
- Assist with pothole repairs, street patching, street sweeping, traffic control, signs, cones, barricades, and flagging as needed.
- Perform mowing, trimming, landscaping, litter removal, tree/brush removal, and general maintenance of parks, grounds, and City-owned property.
- Assist with setup, cleanup, and breakdown for City events and public functions.
- Perform basic maintenance in and around City buildings, parks, and facilities.
- Assist with animal control-related duties as assigned and as allowed by City policy and applicable law.
- Operate and maintain hand tools, power tools, equipment, vehicles, and machinery in a safe and responsible manner.
- Follow verbal and written instructions, safety procedures, traffic control practices, and City policies.
- Maintain regular and timely attendance.
- Participate in rotating on-call duty and respond to after-hours emergencies, including some evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED equivalent preferred.
- Valid Texas driver’s license required prior to employment.
- One year of construction, maintenance, utility, public works, landscaping, or related experience preferred.
- Ability to follow instructions, work safely, and communicate effectively with supervisors, co-workers, and the public.
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Ability to perform physical labor, including lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, bending, kneeling, standing, walking, and using tools and equipment for extended periods, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Ability to lift and carry heavy objects, up to 80 pounds as job duties require, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Must be able to participate in rotating on-call duty and emergency response as needed.
- Must successfully complete all required pre-employment screening, which may include a criminal background check, drug screening, and post-offer physical or ability-to-perform assessment, as permitted by law.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in water, wastewater, street maintenance, construction, equipment operation, parks, or general municipal maintenance.
- Ability to obtain water, wastewater, or other job-related licenses or certifications as required by the City.
- Basic knowledge of tools, equipment, safety procedures, and maintenance practices.

- Be punctual and maintain regular attendance.
- Work outside normal business hours when required, including during emergencies or on-call assignments.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Probationary Period and Benefits
The selected employees will serve an initial 90-day probationary period. After 90 days of employment, the employee may be eligible to enroll in City benefits, subject to the terms of the City’s policies and benefit plans.

Employment Status
This position is a non-exempt, hourly position and may be eligible for overtime in accordance with applicable law and City policy.
Employment with the City is at-will unless otherwise provided by law, ordinance, contract, or City policy. This job posting does not create an employment contract.
