Description
Position Summary
The Streets Maintenance Worker performs a variety of manual labor tasks and equipment operation related to the construction, repair, and maintenance of city streets, sidewalks, rights-of-way, and related infrastructure. Duties include asphalt repair, concrete work, mowing, vegetation control, and seasonal maintenance such as snow and ice removal. This position ensures the safety, functionality, and cleanliness of public roadways and responds to weather events, emergencies, and public service requests as needed.
Requirements
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Repair and patch asphalt and concrete roadways, including pothole patching and crack sealing.
Repair and/or replace damaged curbs, gutters, and sidewalks.
Operate equipment such as dump trucks, rollers, compactors, loaders, and pavement saws.
Mow grass and trim weeds along streets, ditches, sidewalks, and medians using mowers, weed
eaters, and trimmers.
Remove brush, overgrown vegetation, and litter from public rights-of-way.
Apply herbicides for vegetation control in accordance with city policies and safety guidelines.
Install and maintain traffic signs, barricades, and pavement markings.
Perform street sweeping, debris removal, and storm drain clearing.
Assist with snow and ice control operations, including salting of city sidewalks.
Set up and maintain safe work zones using cones, signage, and flagging as needed.
Respond to emergency calls for downed trees, blocked roads, flooding, or hazardous road
conditions.
Maintain tools, vehicles, and equipment in safe and proper working condition.
Complete daily reports and maintain accurate records of work performed and materials used.
Assists other Public Works divisions as needed.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
High school diploma or equivalent.
Prior experience in street or grounds maintenance, landscaping, or construction preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Water distribution and sewer collection system operations, maintenance, and repair.
Occupational hazards, safety practices, and traffic control procedures.
Ability to operate a variety of power tools and equipment.
Understanding of mowing, trimming, and vegetation control techniques.
Strong communication skills.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Basic principles of recordkeeping and reporting.
Ability to work in adverse weather conditions, perform heavy manual labor, and respond to
emergencies after hours.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Ability to work on-call.
Licenses & Certifications
Possession of valid driver’s license. CDL Class B (preferred or required within one year of hire).
