- Public Works Maintenance Worker
Description
The Public Works Maintenance Worker is a non-exempt employee under the general supervision of the Public Works Director. The purpose of the position is to provide comprehensive administration for the water and wastewater maintenance functions for the City. Employees in this class have thorough knowledge of principles of water distribution and wastewater collection, and are capable of participating in all facets of work under charge. Position is responsible for successfully managing the water and wastewater operations, all associated personnel, the financial responsibilities inherent in the work, and the equipment, materials, and supplies utilized by the division.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Understand and execute written and oral instructions
Responds to customer concerns and inquiries concerning all aspects of water and wastewater operations.
Operate all of the following: mowers, brush hog, track hoe, excavator, back hoe, zero turn belly mower, dump trucks, pick-ups, tractors, hammers, compressors, weed eaters, blowers, chain saws and all equipment and vehicles necessary to perform water, wastewater and streets maintenance.
Water and wastewater system repairs.
Equipment maintenance and repair, and vehicle maintenance and repair.
Meter reading.
Inventory.
Maintenance, repairs and new construction of city streets and parks.
Maintains division equipment, materials, and supplies inventory.
Responds to emergencies, and assists personnel in all facets of tasks performed as needed.
Subject to 24 hour call out for emergencies or to insure adequate personnel are on duty.
Maintains current knowledge of trends and developments in the field, and facilitates application of such as appropriate.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
Meet schedules and timelines
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS
While the following tasks are necessary for the work of the unit, they are not an essential part of the purpose of this position and may also be performed by other unit members.

Requirements
NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Requires the ability to operate and control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools and/or materials requiring complex and rapid adjustments.
Requires the ability to perform mathematical operations involving basic algebraic principles and formulas, and basic geometric principles and calculations.
Requires ability to apply principles of rational systems.
Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form.
Ability to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.
Requires the ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving a variety of generally pre-defined duties which are often characterized by frequent change.
Requires the ability to perform semi-skilled coordinated movements, such as operating a truck, computer terminal, drafting instruments, and engineering scale.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
High school diploma or GED; supplemented by required vocational/technical TCEQ certification.
TCEQ Class C Distribution Certificate required within 24 months of employment if City funded.
TCEQ Class C Ground Water Certificate required within 24 months of employment if City funded.
TCEQ Class C Waste Water Certificate required within 24 months of employment if City funded.
TCEQ Collection I - Sewer Certificate required within 24 months of employment if City funded.
Texas State Class B Commercial Driver’s License required.
ADA COMPLIANCE
Physical Ability: Some tasks involve the regular, and at times sustained, performance of heavier physical tasks such as walking over rough or uneven surfaces, bending, stooping, working in confined spaces, and lifting or carrying moderately heavy (20-50 pounds) items and occasionally very heavy (100 pounds or over) items.
Some tasks involve the frequent use of coordination and manipulative skills in performing a variety of tasks with the full range of hand and power tools and shop equipment; or the skilled and complex operation of heavy equipment calling for adherence to exacting standards of depth, grade, dimensions, and contours.
Sensory Requirements: Some tasks may require color perception and discrimination; taste perception and discrimination; odor perception and discrimination; depth perception and discrimination, and visual perception and discrimination. Some tasks require oral communications ability.
Environmental Factors: Some tasks may regularly be performed with exposure to adverse environmental conditions; such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, toxic agents, violence, disease, or pathogenic substances.
