Description
DEFINITION: This position involves overall general maintenance and responsibilities for the overall
daily operations of the City of Valley Mills; which include but are not limited to: general maintenance
of all and any City properties; water and sewer utility maintenance including management of the
City’s wastewater treatment plant; maintenance and repair of City streets; landscape maintenance of
City owned facilities, properties and right-of-ways; operating and maintaining motorized equipment
such as trucks, sewer rodding machine, flusher, and or similar maintenance/construction equipment.
Good personal disposition and professionalism towards the public are mandatory for this position.
This is an at-will position and employee will be under the direct supervision of the City Secretary.

General Maintenance of all and any City properties and buildings: Which includes but not limited to: replacing air filters, changing light bulbs, cleaning and restocking park facilities, emptying trash cans around City (i.e. Santa Fe Park,
In-Town Fields/Splash Pad, Boy Scout Park, along Avenue C),
Water and Sewer Utility Maintenance: Including operating, managing and inspecting all the City’s water and wastewater treatment tank(s) and plant, reporting directly to the Operations Supervisor, if any problem occurs. Remove items from bar screen at the WWTP; Remove floating material in WWTP clarifier and chlorine chamber; pumping and cleaning the chlorine chamber; Removing wasting sludge from the clarifier to the drying beds; Removing dried sludge in the drying beds to the roll off dumpster.
Checking and reading both wells, as well as, checking both lift stations daily, reporting directly to Operations Supervisor immediately regarding problems.
Repair, replace, and/or install any new or broken City water or sewer line, tap, valve,
and/or meter. Reporting all water leaks and repairs to the Operations Supervisor
before work starts.
Flushing dead ends or fire hydrants;
Maintenance and Repair of City Streets: Maintain potholes and low spots in the streets, as best as possible, with the materials (i.e. crushed base or asphalt) and equipment provided (i.e. backhoe and/or packer/roller) by the City. Including replacement of signs and sign poles within the City.
Landscape maintenance of City owned facilities, properties and right-of-ways: Including grass cutting and trimming, blowing debris off sidewalks, pruning and trimming of trees and hedges; collection of leaves. Properties include but are not
limited to City Hall, Santa Fe Park, Building at Santa Fe Park, Old City Hall, Fire Station, In-Town Fields / Splash Pad, Boy Scout Park / R.V. Park, Sewer Plant Property, City Dump Property, and right-of-ways along places like Avenue C / Highway 6 and Seventh Street / 317 that might need maintaining to ensure the safety of our citizens.
Operate and maintain motorized equipment: such as trucks, sewer rodding machine, flusher,
mowers, weed eaters, backhoes, dump trailers, UTVs, and/or similar; maintenance/construction equipment by keeping it in well maintained working order and cleaned after every use.
And other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: (The following knowledge, skills, and abilities are
necessary in order to effectively perform the duties of this position. The omission of specific

ability is similar, related, or a logical expectation for an individual to possess to effectively perform
the duties of this position.)
Maintain a work relationship with City Employees and Council Members to assist in any
capacity needed. - Aid the City Clerk by reading water wells daily, reading water meters monthly and reporting
any water leaks or issues so that the clerk can let citizens know ahead of time or have
knowledge when calls come in. - Keep City Secretary and / or Mayor of any situation or problem going on with the City, and
what is taking place throughout the City so a plan can be made to promptly address and
correct the matter. - Maintain and communicate with the WWTP Operator regarding any and all matters regarding
water system leaks, lift station and water well defects, and the wastewater treatment plant. - Experience operating, maintaining or a general working knowledge of various equipment,
including but not limited to: trucks, dump trailers, backhoes, tractors, mowers, sewer jetter,
packer/roller, chainsaw, hedgers, weed eaters, and other power tools and heavy equipment. - Ability to lift 50 pounds and work outdoors in adverse conditions (snow, rain, heat and cold).
- Ability to report for work and perform the duties of the position for 40 hours a week and be on
call 24/7 in case of an emergency. Work hours will be Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
with a 1 hour lunch, typically from 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. With the ability to work overtime if,
and when needed due to emergency water leaks or sewer back-ups.
