Description
SUMMARY
The School Crossing Guard plays a vital role in ensuring the safety of children walking to and from school. This position involves assisting children in safely crossing streets and intersections by managing pedestrian flow and using a handheld stop sign to control traffic.
Crossing Guards work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions and must always remain alert and attentive.
Schedules and assignment locations may vary and include split shifts. Standard duty hours are 1 hour and 30 minutes in the morning and 1 hour and 35 minutes in the afternoon, for a maximum of 3.05 hours per day. On occasional Early Release days, the afternoon shift is extended to 2 hours, increasing the daily maximum to 3.30 hours.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Uses Appropriate Traffic Signals and Equipment
Utilizes proper hand signals and all issued equipment to assist in controlling traffic during peak school hours within designated school zones. - Assists Children at Crosswalks
Aids school-age children in safely and orderly crossing at designated intersections. - Operates Stop Sign
Must be able to raise and hold a handheld stop sign above head level until all children have safely crossed the intersection. - Manages Traffic Cones
Places traffic cones on the street before school starts and removes them at the end of the school day, as required. - Reports Hazards and Incidents
Promptly reports pedestrian accidents and any real or potential safety hazards that may interfere with crossing safety or efficiency to the Police Department. - Performs Physical Duties in Varying Conditions
Regularly required to stand and walk briskly; must hear and speak clearly, occasionally over traffic noise, and perform duties outdoors in varying weather conditions. - Maintains Reliable Attendance
Consistent and timely attendance is essential to the position. - Demonstrates Professional Conduct
Maintains a positive, friendly, and cooperative working relationship with students, the public, and fellow staff members.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Must be a minimum of eighteen (18) years of age.
- Must have some education (formal or informal), reasoning ability and training which ensures the capability necessary to understand, recognize and follow applicable traffic laws and safety concerns associated with the position.
- Must have a willingness and physical ability to work outdoors in extreme heat/cold and or other hazardous weather conditions.
- Must pass a Federal/National criminal background check and credit check.
- Must have a valid Texas driver's license with an acceptable driving record as defined by City policy.
- Must pass a pre-employment basic physical, drug screen and background check.
- Must be able to pass a physical and drug screen annually prior to the beginning of each school year to verify ability to perform tasks associated with job performance in a safe manner.
- Must pass an annual background check
- Must complete all required training.

- Must have excellent customer service skills.
- Must have good communication and interpersonal skills, tact, patience and courtesy.
- Must enjoy working with the public and children.
- Must have reliable transportation.
- Must be able to stand for extended periods of time.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Have the ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Have the ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
SPECIALIZED KSA'S
Available to work Monday - Friday 07:00a- 08:30a, and 02:30p-4:05p or 11:30a-1:30p for the afternoon shift on school Early Release days.

While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is regularly required to perform medium work that involves walking, standing, sitting, stooping, jumping, stretching, or lifting. The employee frequently is required to stand; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to smell. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
