GENERAL SUMMARY
Interacts with the Springtown Independent School District Administrators, Teachers, and Students on a daily basis in one-on-one classroom settings to provide educational information regarding law enforcement and providing a safe learning environment for the students and staff.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
This position receives supervision from the Deputy Chief of Police. This position does not supervise any other positions.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Duties include but are not limited to the following:
- Assists in the protection of school property, personnel and students in accordance with the duties of a police officer
- Investigates criminal acts which occur on school property
- Coordinates the school’s Crime Stoppers Program
- Serves as liaison between the school and the police department, juvenile officials, probation officials, courts and other agencies of the juvenile justice system
- Participates as a resource person in the classroom, at assemblies and with parent groups by teaching classes, leading discussions or offering information on law enforcement topics, campus security or other police department programs
- Assist staff and students in the interpretation of state and local statutes
- Attempts to detect and identify the early signs of deviant behavior in students
- Provides assistance to neighborhood merchants and residents regarding school related programs
- Improves the image of the uniformed law enforcement officer in the eyes of the students and the community
- Provides presentations to a variety of groups on topics ranging from SRO programs to accurate information about gang activities and gang intervention strategies
- Interprets the function and purpose of the SRO program for the community
- Provides high visibility crime deterrent on school campuses, parking lots and on/or at athletic facilities or events
- Provides mediation, conflict resolution and direction to students, parents and school staff
- Works with the Student Council to resolve school police problems
- Works with parents of troubles students at school
- Makes pertinent literature available to students
- Other duties as assigned
- Counsels and releases juvenile offenders to parents or transfers them to the Juvenile Detention Facility
- Refers juvenile cases to juvenile probation department.
Requirements
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS
Basic TLEOSE Certification, must complete and pass state mandated School Resource Officer certification class upon accepting position.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High School diploma or General Education Degree or practical law enforcement experience
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES
Valid Class C Texas drivers’ license; valid Texas Basic Officer Certification or approved equivalent as accepted by TCLEOSE; School Resource Officer Certification from an approved training institute.
PHYSICAL ABILITIES
Ability to read, write and comprehend the English language. Ability to demonstrate effective communication of ideas both verbally and in written form using the English language. Ability to communicate in the English language under strained circumstances. Ability to demonstrate manual dexterity, strength and proficiency by qualifying with firearms as required by the State of Texas and the City of Springtown Police Department. Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time. Ability to rise, kneel and crawl unaided. Ability to twist upper body without injury. Ability to pull, carry or drag 100 pounds for a distance of at least thirty feet. Ability to coordinate tow or more physical operations simultaneously. Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions involving heat and cold. Ability to control emotions under stressful conditions. Ability to interact with coworkers to accomplish work. Ability to show independence and autonomy. Ability to make quick and sound decisions in stressful situations. Ability to understand and follow City/Department policies, rules and regulations. Ability to identify and distinguish between colors. Ability to work effectively around mechanical hazards. Ability to pass a background investigation by the City of Springtown Police Department. Ability to pass a medical examination, polygraph, psychological and/or drug screen if required by the City of Springtown and/or the State of Texas. Ability to adapt quickly to changing priorities. Ability to demonstrate basic mathematical ability in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Ability to crouch and/or stoop. Ability to work around explosive hazards as with bomb threats, explosions and car fires. Ability to walk and run unaided for specified distances.
