- Street Sweeper Operator
Description
Responsible for the safe and effective operation of heavy equipment used in street and gutter cleaning. Work is performed with considerable independence under general supervision and is reviewed for results produced.
Essential Functions:
- Operates a motorized street sweeper on assigned routes and schedules; keeps routes up to date; responds to special situations such as accidents, cement spills, and other debris; logs and reports road hazards, including abandoned vehicles, tree clearances, and pavement conditions that may impede sweeping operations; organizes and conducts routes with consideration of timing, traffic conditions, and seasonal conditions.
- Maneuvers sweeper along the street near the curb to clean streets and gutters; operates controls to activate brushes and water spray for the removal of dust and pick up of litter; refills machine water tank as necessary.
- Performs general servicing, cleans motor sweeper; checks for broom and regenerative blower system; reports mechanical or other equipment problems; checks and fills oil, water, and fuel.
- Checks tires, lights, reflectors, mirrors, radio, and gauges on the sweeper before operation; fills water tank
- Positions warning devices during sweeper operation and responsible for vehicle and pedestrian safety in the work area.
- Makes minor adjustments to the sweeper on the route; reports damage requiring extensive or complex adjustments or repairs; washes and cleans sweeper at end of shift.
- Reports mileage, water source/consumption, number/location of dumps and other operational details.
- Performs as a member of a team, assists with development of work group goals and objectives, and contributes to the achievement of goals and objectives.
- Safely operates a variety of vehicles and equipment. Complies with safety requirements of the position and actively promotes safe work practices.
- Responds to system maintenance or service calls outside scheduled work hours while on call or in the event of an emergency.
- Performs other skilled tasks associated with equipment operation and operates smaller equipment as needed
- Interfaces with customers regarding service problems and reports information obtained to supervisor
- Maintains regular and punctual on-site attendance

Machines, Tools, Equipment and Work Aids:
The essential functions of this position require the use of heavy equipment, light equipment, and small tools; wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) issued by City of Denton that may include gloves, hard hat, safety goggles/eye protection, hearing protection, steel-toed boots, and uniforms.
Environmental Factors:
The essential functions of this position are performed in various types of weather.

Requirements
Minimum Qualifications / Acceptable Equivalency:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent
- Three years’ experience in heavy equipment in the construction industry or related field
OR
- Any combination of related education, experience, certifications and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job

Preferences:
- Experienced in operation of street sweeper
- Bilingual in Spanish and English
- Prior experience in heavy equipment operations
Conditions of Employment:
- Must pass a drug test, driver’s license check, criminal history background check, and social security number verification check
- Must pass written and field test to demonstrate equipment skills and ability to comprehend plans and grade
- Must possess and maintain a valid Class “A” CDL driver’s license OR must possess a valid Class C driver license upon hire with a good driving record and the ability to obtain a Class A CDL within six (6) months of employment
- Must pass a physical examination
- Must be able to work Monday - Friday 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. and overtime as required
- Must be able to work on call shifts and overtime as needed
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
