SUMMARY:
Under general supervision of the Streets Foreman, this position operates light duty equipment in the construction, repair, and maintenance of City streets, sidewalks, driveways, signage, curbs, gutters, and other forms of storm drainage systems. Street work includes striping of streets, repairing asphalt, pouring, and finishing concrete, removing debris from grates, inlets and culverts. Provides support in other Public Works functions, such as maintenance of City right of ways, clearing, collection, and/or removal of trash, debris, brush, and special events as needed. Performs related work as directed.
Supervision:
Reports to: Foreman. Position will not have direct supervision over other staff.
- Maintains City streets, right of ways, and drainage systems, i.e., cleaning debris from grates, inlets and culverts; trimming overgrowth; installing, repairing and replacing signage; repairing damaged sidewalks.
- Operates various types of equipment, i.e., striping machine, tractors and shredders, sweepers, rollers, skid steers, dump trucks and water trucks, in the construction, maintenance, and repair of City streets, sidewalks, and drainage systems.
- Repairs streets and related areas due to striping, potholes, utility cuts, and City construction activities.
- Maintains records concerning work orders, regularly scheduled vehicle and equipment maintenance, etc.
- Placement of traffic control devices, signs, and caution indicators per work site.
- Attends required safety meetings and training in accordance with department policy.
- Provides support to other Public Works functions as needed such as special events.
- May operate medium duty equipment upon demonstrating essential skill levels for safe and effective operation of assigned equipment.
- Performs related work as directed.
- Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work.
- Knowledge of safe and effective operation of light duty equipment and hand-held gas, diesel, or electrically powered tools used in the construction, maintenance, and repair of City streets, roadways, right of ways, and drainage systems.
- Ability to comprehend and retain knowledge of the practices and materials utilized in the installation, maintenance, and restoration and repair of streets and drainage systems.
- Ability to understand and receive both oral and written instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, fellow personnel, and outside departments and agencies with which position interacts.

In a typical work setting, the Streets Maintenance Technician shall:
Interpersonal Relationships
Have a high level of social contact interacting with office staff, citizens, vendors, and other officials. Communicate professionally with people daily by telephone, e-mail, and in person.
Hours/Travel
Works a standard 40-hour week, 5 days per week. Work schedule is M-F 7am-4pm, but may require overtime, including evenings or weekends to meet deadlines or for special city sponsored events.
Physical Demands and Work Conditions
Requires physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds. Physical work is a primary part of the job (more than 70%). This position will involve some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which requires following basic safety precautions. Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises. Works in indoor and outdoor conditions, in seasonal and weather conditions; drives a vehicle; subject to emergency situations.
Requirements
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or GED; and minimum one (1) year work experience that demonstrates the ability to safely and effectively operate a variety of light duty equipment associated with the construction, maintenance and/or repair of streets, sidewalks, and drainage systems; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
License and Certifications:
Valid Texas Class "C" Driver License or higher and acceptable driving record throughout employment, Ability to obtain a Class A CDL License within 12 months of hire.
