Dispatcher - Police & Emergency Services
The dispatcher works under the general shift supervisor and Telecommunications Supervisor. This position fills a regularly scheduled dispatch shift in the Communications Center, providing assistance to Westworth Village when needed and other contracted cities from our communications center. In addition, this position performs routine office work, preparing and filing reports internally as needed.
General Dispatching duties include: receiving and dispatching radio calls along with telephone and 9-1-1 calls for police, fire, and medical services.
Telephones: Administrative lines (2), 9-1-1 lines (5), TDD/TTY lines for the hearing/vision/speech impaired (1). These phone lines are ready for incoming police, fire and after hours city problems.
Radio: Receive and transmit information for police, fire, and EMS. This radio system is capable of communicating with select other local agencies in times of mutual aid.
Primary Job Duties/Responsibilities:
- Receives emergency and non-emergency calls for service by phone and in person.
- Process and evaluate information received and dispatch law enforcement and/or Fire/EMS, prioritizing all calls and the availability (number and types of personnel needed) to respond.
- Tracks location and availability of police units; dispatches police units and/or forwards call to appropriate agency for response.
- Prepares, processes and maintains accurate records and logs of all radio transmissions.
- Monitor and control the movement of field units and provide appropriate and effective coverage in response to public safety emergencies.
- Maintain and validate data in local, state and national computerized databases including the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and the Texas Crime Information Center (TCIC).
- Correspond or communicate with other Cities, agencies, etc. to confirm or request information of a valid offense report or other law enforcement matters.
- Act as a liaison between the Westover Hills Police, Fort Worth Fire Departments, MedStar and other City departments and/or City or Government agencies as needed in response to a call for service.
- Provide a shift account to the oncoming dispatcher & shift supervisors at shift change.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Education, Certification and Experience:
•High School Diploma or GED Required
•Preference given to those with experience or Basic TCOLE Certification(s) – Dispatcher or Peace Officer
•Must possess or be eligible to obtain Notary Public registration.
•Considerable knowledge of general office equipment and procedures.
•Excellent computer skills (Microsoft 365)
•Pleasant and distinct radio/phone voice, good verbal fluency and grammar, and a well-groomed professional appearance.
•Knowledge of English grammar, punctuation, spelling, and numerical skills.
•Maintain valid Texas Driver's License and a safe driving record; with no Class B convictions
- Must meet TCIC/NCIC policies for police record access.
•Ability to pass a background investigation including fingerprint submission, prior to hire.
•Possession of a Valid Texas Class C Driver's License
•Bilingual preferred but not required
Environmental & Physical
The physical demands and work environment is representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the principal duties and responsibilities of this position or which the employee will encounter. Work is primarily performed inside; however, outdoor activities in varied weather conditions may be scheduled. The employee is occasionally exposed to personal risk while working in dangerous and life threatening situations, working in the dispatch center or riding in a police vehicle. The noise level of the work environment is generally quiet to moderately loud.
- Ability to see and hear at normal levels with or without devices.
- Ability to verbally communicate and have understandable articulation.
- Ability to demonstrate manual dexterity (keyboarding 45wpm), strength, and proficiency required to perform office equipment maintenance.
- Ability to sit for prolonged periods
- Ability to crouch and/or stoop, rise, kneel, and crawl.
- Ability to twist upper body while working with arms and hands extended.
- Ability to manipulate, pick-up, and carry 30 pounds for a distance of at least 10 feet; to bookshelf height.

- Ability to positively interact with all social and economic backgrounds to provide excellent customer service.
- Ability to recover quickly after a traumatic call or event.
- Ability to pass a drug screen and physical upon hire and as required by policy.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
