What You’ll Do
As an Animal Control Officer for the City of Odessa, you’ll play a vital role in protecting public health and ensuring the humane treatment of animals in our community. You’ll respond to service calls, enforce animal-related laws, and care for animals in the city’s shelter. This is a hands-on, field-based position where every day is different and meaningful.
Key Responsibilities
Respond to calls involving stray, injured, or aggressive animals.
Enforce animal ordinances and issue citations as needed.
Investigate animal complaints, including bites and scratches.
Capture, transport, and impound animals safely.
Perform humane euthanasia when necessary.
Provide care and cleaning for shelter animals.
Maintain accurate reports, logs, and vehicle cleanliness.
Interact with the public in a professional, respectful manner.
Minimum Requirements
High school diploma or GED
Valid Texas Driver’s License
Must pass a 70-pound lift test during the hiring process
Must obtain Euthanasia Certification within 120 days of hire
Must obtain Basic Animal Control Certification within 1 year of hire
Pre-Rabies vaccination required upon hire
Ability to perform physically demanding tasks in various environmental conditions
Willingness to work with potentially aggressive, sick, or deceased animals
