Description
The City of Portland, Texas, is seeking a motivated and customer service focused multi-tasker to join our team as Building Official.
The purpose of this position is to plan, review, organize and direct the building department by inspecting new and existing buildings and structures to enforce conformance to building, grading, and zoning laws and approved plans, specifications, and standards. This is accomplished by performing the inspections to meet code requirement on quality of work done by the contractors; noting any code violations and verifying compliance with code; developing and implementing a backflow program and maintaining records of annual backflow report; developing and implementing a Fats, Oils and Grease program and maintaining records and enforcement; and reviewing permit applications, submittals and progress by overseeing all aspects of construction and occupancy. The position also closely coordinates and communicates with all other Public Works and Development divisions and staff, Fire Department and Administration to ensure communications and teamwork focused approaches are maintained.
This position is subject to the City of Portland’s Background Investigation and Drug Testing Policy. New hires are required to provide proof of identity and legal authority to work in the United States per Federal law.

Requirements
Valid Drivers’ License with a clean record. At least 3 years’ experience as a Building Inspector, City Inspector or a combination of the two. Associate’s degree or equivalent (Preferred). Excellent customer service and written communication skills. Must successfully obtain Plumbing, ICC, Mechanical, Electrical, and Building certifications within 6 months of employment. Additional preferred areas of expertise or experience should include development, implementation and support for F-O-G and Backflow programs; GIS; code enforcement initiatives; and other “Team” duties as required.
