JOB POSTING: Firefighter (Full-Time)
Department: Gilmer Fire Department
Reports To: Company Officer / Fire Chief
Status: Full-Time
Position Overview
The City of Gilmer is seeking a dedicated individual for the position of Firefighter. This role
is essential to community safety, involving fire suppression, emergency medical services,
and rescue operations. Firefighters are responsible for protecting life and property while
maintaining departmental equipment and station facilities.
Essential Functions
- Emergency Response: Respond to fire alarms, medical emergencies, hazardous
materials incidents, and rescue calls. - Medical Care: Provide emergency medical services to victims and assist local
medical providers as requested. - Maintenance: Maintain fire apparatus, equipment, buildings, and grounds to
ensure constant readiness. - Inspections: Inspect buildings for fire hazards and assist in completing pre-fire
plans. - Training: Participate in ongoing training to maintain and improve firefighting and
EMS skills.
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications:
- Age: Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Certifications:
- Must be TCFP (Texas Commission on Fire Protection) Firefighter Basic
certified or certifiable. - Must hold a valid Texas Department of State Health Services
(DSHS) certification (EMR or higher).
Driver’s License: Valid Texas Class “B” license (or ability to obtain within 60 days of
hire).
- Must be TCFP (Texas Commission on Fire Protection) Firefighter Basic
- Physical Requirements: Ability to pass a physical agility test.
Background: Must pass a detailed criminal background check and a pre
employment drug screen.
Salary & Benefits
- Starting Salary: Estimated at approximately $48,698.52 per year.
Automatic 117 hours of overtime per year in addition to starting salary.
Retirement: Participation in the Texas Municipal Retirement System (TMRS) with
a 2:1 City Match. - Insurance: City-paid medical, dental, and life insurance for the employee.
- Leave: 2-weeks paid vacation, 2-weeks sick leave, and 15 paid holidays annually.
