- Fleet Maintenance Technician I
Description
SUMMARY
Under general supervision of the Public Works Supervisor, performs maintenance, repair, and diagnostics on City fleet vehicles and motorized equipment, including departmental vehicles, landscaping equipment, construction equipment, and other specialized equipment. Performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled repair tasks.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Performs routine preventative maintenance, including air filters, oil changes, tires, batteries, and scheduling state vehicle inspections.
- Performs routine maintenance and repairs on equipment, including backhoes, tractors, mowers, loaders, and similar equipment.
- Performs maintenance and repairs on small engines and related equipment, including pumps, weed eaters, generators, chainsaws, and similar equipment.
- Services, troubleshoots, and performs semi-skilled automotive repairs on engines and on electrical, mechanical, and computerized vehicle systems and components.
- Maintains the shop area, tools, and equipment in an orderly and safe manner.
- Maintains inventory of parts, supplies, tools, and equipment.
- Disposes of or recycles used oil, hazardous materials, and chemicals in accordance with applicable occupational and environmental regulations and practices.
- Reviews owner and repair manuals, schematics, and drawings to determine manufacturer recommendations for troubleshooting and preventative maintenance procedures.
- Tracks time, materials, supplies, and parts used to maintain and repair City fleet vehicles and heavy equipment.
- Completes assigned work orders.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to:
- Must be able to wear City-approved Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Ability to lift or move objects up to 50 pounds.
The essential functions of this position are performed inside a shop/garage area with some work outside in order to drive and/or check vehicles. The employee is exposed to fumes, dust, gas, and loud noises associated with the repair of vehicles and to moving equipment and machinery parts. Employee is exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; outside weather conditions; high, precarious places; confined spaces; toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock and vibration. In all cases, appropriate procedures and PPE will be utilized.

Requirements
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
- Ability to prioritize projects with strong attention to detail while meeting required deadlines.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND LICENSES /CERTIFICATIONS
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Valid Texas Class C Driver’s License required.
- Must possess or obtain within one (1) year of employment, a valid Texas Class A CDL Driver’s License.
OR
- Any combination of related education and experience that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job. *
*Obtaining a valid Class A CDL Driver’s License is required within one (1) year of employment.
PREFERRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS
- Two (2) years of paid professional experience maintaining and repairing fleet vehicles and related heavy and light-duty equipment.
- Associate’s degree in Automotive Technology, Diesel Technology, Heavy Equipment Technology, or related field.
- Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certified
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Must pass a pre-employment drug test.
- Must pass a driver’s license check, criminal history background check, and social security number verification.
- Must be able to work overtime and emergency call back as needed or determined by the business needs of the department.
