- Legal Intern for the City Attorney's Office
Description
The Grand Prairie City Attorney’s Office is seeking a 3L law student or recent law school graduate who is interested in an opportunity to learn and work with a local government entity, and who qualifies for a Supervised Practice Card under the Rules Governing the Supervised Practice of Law by Qualified Law Students and Qualified Unlicensed Law School Graduates in Texas.** Under the supervision of the Deputy City Attorney and the Lead Municipal Prosecutor, the intern will assist the City Attorney’s Office in prosecution of criminal Class “C” misdemeanor cases in the City’s Municipal Court. Specifically, the intern will assist the Prosecutor’s Office with preparation of cases for Class “C” criminal and civil code violations in the City’s Municipal Court, including both bench and jury trials, preparing for and handling pretrial conferences, plea agreements, preparation of motions, and other legal documents. In addition, the intern will assist with reviewing reports, preparing complaints, and assisting with interviewing and preparing witnesses for trial. The intern will also conduct legal research and draft legal memoranda on various issues that affect local governments, as needed.
The intern should possess excellent legal research, writing and communication skills and have the ability to analyze complex legal issues. Familiarity with criminal law and a demonstrated interest in trial work is preferred, but not required. Interns should be able to commit 16-20 hours per week on site. Attendance at some evening meetings may be required. Compensation: $23.50 per hour (maximum of 440 hours per semester)
Requirements
Accepted class years: 3L, recent law school graduate, or other student that is eligible and meets the requirements to obtain supervised practice card in accordance with the Texas Rules Governing the Supervised Practice of Law.

How to apply: Applicants should complete an application located on the City’s website located at
City of Grand Prairie. Applicants will be required to provide all four of the following:
(1) Cover letter explaining their interest in the internship and any relevant life or work experience gained
before or during law school;
(2) Resume;
(3) Unofficial transcript; and
(4) Legal writing sample of no more than 10 pages.
The successful applicant must pass a criminal background check and drug screening. Hours of operation
of the Court are 7am – 6pm, Monday-Thursday. Trials are scheduled for Thursdays; therefore, Thursday
attendance is required. The court is closed on Friday. Some remote work may be allowed if approved by
the supervisor; however, the intern must have access to reliable Internet service to work remotely.
