Description
JOB SUMMARY:
Under direction of Librarian, perform a variety of complex paraprofessional duties including but not limited to reader guidance, simple cataloging, and program assistance. Perform other related work as required.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Keep abreast of literature and assigned subjects; read professional literature; review titles for material selection; read and scan titles from the collection. Maintain the work area in acceptable fashion and keeps records. Assist with routine departmental paperwork, programs, displays, book lists, reader guidance, and basic reference services. Perform simple cataloging. Operate computer for database/Internet searches, inputting data, and for e-mail. Communicate courteously and effectively with public, library staff, officials, and other city employees. Sit and stand for extended periods of time while assisting patrons with public access catalog training, inputting data, and retrieving materials. Retrieve books and materials from shelves up to 8 feet high, with the aid of step stools, using appropriate safety precautions. Lift and carry materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Some exposure to dust, odors and mechanical and electrical hazards, using appropriate safety precautions. Weekend and evening work required.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
Operate photocopier.
Requirements
REQUIRED EDUCATION, DEGREES, CERTIFICATES AND/OR LICENSES:
Bachelor’s degree required.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Must be able to communicate courteously and effectively with public, library staff, officials, and other city employees. Skills required in operating complex computer automated library system. Basic computer literacy and Internet searching skills required. Job experience or apprenticeship preferred in the phase of librarianship for which hired.
