Description
SUMMARY
Under direct supervision, this position performs a wide variety of routine tasks in support of the municipal library programs, services and activities, including providing customer service, processing materials, organizing collections and assisting with special events and programs.
Employees receive paid vacation and sick leave, and eleven (11) paid holidays which accrue at the beginning of the year and may be used at any time. The Library offers a flexible compressed work schedule Tuesday – Friday from 9:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. with Monday's off. Employee will work 18-hours per week.
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Essential Functions:
1. Maintains the library’s appearance by sorting and shelving books and other library materials, shelving materials placed on reserve, removing materials from book drops, searching for overdue items, straightening all areas putting everything back in its place, ensuring that books and other materials are correctly arranged on shelves to maintain access to the collection.
2. Assist with moving books and organizing the collections or other special projects as assigned.
3. Assist with special events and programs such as summer reading program kick off and finale, children’s programs, haunted stacks and other similar events.
4. Receives and distributes mail as well as materials donated by patrons.
5. May also assist in responding to more routine patron questions regarding the location of library materials.
6. Available for evening and weekend hours and special events as required.
7. Maintain statistics for monthly and annual reports.
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
· Principles and practices of excellent customer service
· Modern office equipment and computer resources
· Principles and practices of excellent online etiquette and social media marketing
Ability to:
· Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
· Understand and follow oral and written instructions
· Operate office equipment, computer equipment, and software programs, especially Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Outlook) desktop publishing software (Canva, Adobe Creative Suite) and current social media apps (Facebook, Instagram)
· Learn to file alphabetically and numerically
· Carry out routine clerical and library procedures
· Establish and maintain effective relationships with public and other city departments
· Maintain mental capacity that permits making sound judgments regarding work
· Demonstrate intrinsic motivation, high ethical and moral standards
· Provide excellent customer service to library users in a courteous manner
· Learn the operations, policy and procedures of the Library
· Work irregular hours involving evenings, and special events as required, while maintaining regular, reliable attendance
· Clear a post-offer physical, drug test, criminal background and other appropriate testing and requirements.
EXPERIENCE and TRAINING GUIDELINES
Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the essential functions of the job is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education and/or Experience:
Requires a high school diploma or GED or candidates who are currently enrolled in high school or enrolled in a GED test course. Must have the ability to follow instructions; learn basic Library operations; learn basic office clerical and customer service skills; work as part of a team and complete tasks assigned by supervisors
