Job Summary:
The Lifeguard is responsible for ensuring the safety of patrons at City aquatic facilities by actively monitoring pool areas, enforcing facility rules, and responding quickly and effectively to emergencies. This position maintains water sanitation standards, assists with facility setup for programs and events, provides excellent customer service, and works cooperatively with staff and the public to ensure a safe and welcoming aquatic environment.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Education: Ability to read and follow written instructions required. Equivalent to less than a high school diploma.
- Experience: No prior lifeguarding experience required.
- Licenses/Certifications: Current Lifeguard Certification required. CPR and First Aid certification required. AED certification required (typically included with lifeguard certification).
Essential Job Functions:
- Actively scans the pool and surrounding areas to monitor patron activity and ensure safety.
- Enforces pool rules and educates patrons on safe behavior and facility expectations.
- Responds promptly and effectively to emergencies, including administering first aid, CPR, and AED as needed.
- Identifies and addresses hazardous situations to prevent injuries.
- Performs routine safety checks and facility inspections.
- Assists patrons with swim tests, life jacket fittings, and safety orientations.
- Provides customer service by answering questions and informing guests of programs, schedules, and events.
- Assists with setup and breakdown of equipment for programs and special events, including tables and chairs.
- Completes opening and closing procedures as assigned.
- Works cooperatively with other lifeguards, staff, and management.
- Maintains regular and dependable attendance.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge of:
- Lifeguarding techniques, wate rescue, and emergency response procedures.
- Pool safety rules and facility regulations.
- Customer service principles and effective communication practices.
- Basic water sanitation and safety inspection procedures.
- City policies and procedures.
Skills in:
- Monitoring swimmer activity and enforcing safety rules.
- Responding calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
- Communicating clearly with patrons and coworkers.
- Working collaboratively as part of a team.
- Following written and verbal instructions accurately.
Physical Demands/Work Environment:
Work is performed in indoor and outdoor aquatic environments. Must be able to communicate clearly and read, see, and hear in various conditions. Requires the physical ability to run, bend, kneel, lift up to 50 pounds, and handle pool equipment and supplies. Exposure to water, chemicals, humidity, noise, and varying weather conditions is expected. May be required to perform rescues or provide first aid in emergency situations.
