SUMMARY
The purpose of the position is to complete a variety of tasks in the construction, maintenance and repair of streets, sidewalks, and storm drains. This is accomplished by constructing or maintaining streets, alleyways, sidewalks, and storm drains; completing repairs; removing debris, trimming trees; and maintaining vehicles and equipment. Other duties include related tasks which contribute to the upkeep and care of streets, alleys and rights-of-way.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Repairs streets, alleys, and sidewalks by removing portions of streets and alleys; reviewing the work site; determining necessary materials, resources and supplies; patching and repairing surfaces; rebuilding shoulders; reconditioning materials; removing materials from rights-of-way; and operating equipment.
Ensures site safety by directing traffic flow; placing and removing traffic cones; placing and removing barricades; and routing traffic as appropriate.
Maintains drivable streets and alleyways by sweeping streets and removing debris; removing downed trees and other large objects; trimming trees; hauling and placing sand on roads; and ensuring proper drainage.
Completes signage projects by maintaining and reporting inventories; ordering or developing new signs; delivering signs to areas; and placing signage in assigned spots.
Maintains vehicles by checking fluids; stocking vehicles with equipment, materials, and supplies; and reporting maintenance or repairs.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High school graduation or equivalent
Two years of experience in construction or maintenance preferred
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of methods, materials and techniques used in the construction and maintenance of roadways
Knowledge of standard safety processes, work gear and procedures
Skill in the operation and use of standard office software which includes databases and presentation programs, along with standard Microsoft products
Skill in the operation and maintenance of construction tools and equipment
Ability to operate heavy equipment
Ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing, with co-workers, the public, and elected and appointed officials
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
May be subject to call back
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATES
Valid driver’s license with good driving record and ability to maintain while employed
WORKING CONDITIONS
Position requires bending, lifting and moving in extreme temperatures and heavy physical effort in working with materials generally weighing one hundred (100) pounds or less.
