Description
JOB SUMMARY: Duties include accurately reading and maintaining water meters and keeping records according to established policies to ensure proper billing. This position also performs general utility maintenance duties, including assisting with water break repairs, sewer line maintenance, and equipment maintenance.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Reads meters on assigned routes and records readings accurately and on schedule.
- Checks to determine the condition of meters; investigates questionable readings; maintains and changes out inactive or broken meters, meter boxes, and curb stops; tests meters for accuracy as required.
- Submits records of defective equipment and new replacement equipment to appropriate City personnel for billing purposes.
- Orders necessary supplies and prepares purchase orders.
- Prepares reports as needed.
- Operates light trucks and various hand tools in performing duties.
- Serves as a general maintenance worker as instructed.
- Assists in repairing water breaks and unclogging sewer lines.
- Drives pickup trucks.
- Follows all applicable safety procedures and uses required personal protective equipment (PPE), including traffic control and confined-space safety practices when working near roadways, in meter boxes, or in below-grade structures.
- Responds to after-hours and emergency calls (e.g., water main breaks) as part of an on-call rotation.
- Performs other duties as may be assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Mechanical ability.
- Ability to learn the location of meters and read various types of meters.
- Ability to perform simple mathematical computations.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees and good customer relations with the public.
- Ability to read maps, route sheets, and maintain accurate records.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions and established safety procedures.
Requirements
REQUIRED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Prior experience in utility maintenance, meter reading, construction, or a related field preferred.
- Valid Texas driver’s license required
- Must acquire a Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) Class D Water Operator license preferred at hire; if not held, must be obtained within 18 months of hire.
- Must maintain an acceptable driving record in accordance with City policy.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Physical condition sufficient to permit extensive walking, standing, bending, and climbing over varied terrain for extended periods.
- Ability to regularly lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs., and occasionally up to 75 lbs. with assistance.
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, and humidity.
- Exposure to traffic, uneven ground, and meter boxes.
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle and various hand or power tools as needed.
- Subject to call-back for emergency response outside of regular working hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays
