Under the general supervision of the Director of Parks & Recreation, this position performs a variety of skilled manual labor tasks in the maintenance and improvements of parks, grounds, and related facilities. Performs related work as required.
Essential Functions:
- Mows grass, trims shrubbery, clears, and landscapes property.
- Paints, repairs fences and gates, and remove leaves and other debris.
- Performs litter control, weeding, and trimming; walks through brush or entangled areas along creeks and other areas. Also learns to identify desirable and undesirable plants and vegetation; cut weeds to clear fields and wooded areas of undergrowth; remove vines from and prune trees as directed.
- Operates equipment necessary to complete assigned tasks such as mowing machines, power and hand tools, hedge
- trimmers, leaf blowers, mulch machines, and other equipment as assigned.
- Operates heavy equipment including tractors, skid steers, mini excavators, trenchers, aerators, stump grinders and other specialized equipment used in parks and facility maintenance
- Performs irrigation system installation, troubleshooting, repair, and preventative maintenance including valves, controllers, sprinkler heads, lateral lines, and main lines.
- Assists with construction, installation, and repair of park amenities and infrastructure including fencing, signage, benches, playground components, concrete forms, drainage systems, athletic field equipment, and related facilities.
- Performs grading, trenching, hauling, excavation, and site preparation work associated with park improvement and maintenance projects.
- Performs traffic control setup and works safely around roadways, construction zones, and public access areas.
- Performs athletic field maintenance including infield grooming, field striping, turf renovation, irrigation adjustments, and sports field preparation.
- Reads and interprets basic blueprints, irrigation layouts, work orders, and equipment manuals.
- Assists supervisor in all tasks as directed.
- Assist other departments as necessary.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
- Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up the 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up-to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Must possess the visual acuity to operate equipment and motor vehicles, and review work for accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness.
- Ability to perform manual labor for an extended period, often under adverse climatic conditions.
- Exposure to hazards associated with equipment operation including chemicals, fumes, oils, gases, and mists.
- Exposure to dangerous plants, animals, and insects.
- Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and/or control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions.
- Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference data and information such as equipment manuals, City policy manuals, and line locators.
- Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
- Requires ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form. Involves semi-routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgment concerning choices of action.
- Requires the ability to exercise the judgment required in situations characterized by repetitive or short cycle operations covered by set procedures or sequences.
- Requires the ability to perform coordinated movements involving placing and turning motions, such as operating a front-end loader, dump truck, bucket truck, concrete truck, vactron truck, and utilizing an asphalt rake, concrete hand tool, and various other tools.

Minimum Qualifications Requirements:
High School diploma or GED equivalent; some experience in grounds maintenance. Must pass a pre-employment drug screening, and physical and criminal background check. Must possess a valid State of Texas Driver’s License, reliable transportation, and ability to drive; maintain and provide proof of liability insurance. Have and maintain a professional, inviting, and friendly demeanor. Must have a working cell phone and the ability to respond to after-hours calls.

Physical Ability: Tasks involve the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing, but typically also involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds); may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (up to 100 pounds). Some tasks require visual and odor perception and discrimination.
Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require visual perception and discrimination and oral communication ability.
Environmental Factors: Exposure to certain environmental conditions may be necessary to perform the essential functions of this job, including over two-thirds of the on-the-job time; wet or humid conditions; working near moving, mechanical parts; working in high, previous places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outdoor weather conditions; extreme heat; vibration.
