COMPENSATION: $22.32 - 26.78/hour, DOQ
(full range: $22.32 - 32.37/hour)
FUTURE POSSIBLE COMPENSATION: Historically, the City of Roanoke has granted a 4% base pay increase to employees that successfully complete their probationary process. For example: an employee earning $22.32/hr would move to a rate of $23.21/hr if they successfully complete their 6-month probationary period.
SCHEDULE: Mon. - Thurs. 6:00am - 2:30pm, Fri. 6:00am - 10:00am. Flexibility to work evenings/weekends for events or emergencies required.

POSITION SUMMARY:
Under general supervision by the Crew Leader, the incumbent is responsible for performing all job duties of the Parks Maintenance Technician I. Additionally, the role involves completing assigned projects, assuring all equipment and materials are available for designated projects, upholding safe working conditions, and supporting supervisors in determining job priorities. In the absence of the Crew Leader, the incumbent will take the lead in overseeing the team’s activities related to grounds keeping and maintenance of the City’s athletic facilities, park areas, and community facilities for visitor use, special events, and other designated functions.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Perform all duties of Parks Maintenance Technician I. In the absence of the Crew Leader, supervise all grounds keeping activities, task assignments, job performance, etc. of Parks Maintenance staff.
- Complete all assigned schedules and reports, including daily activity and monthly equipment inventory. Coordinate maintenance needs with supervisors. Assist in the coordination and preparation of special projects and events with the Parks and Recreation Department and other City staff.
- Operate specialized equipment in a safe manner, such as power mowers, chain saws, fertilizer spreaders, aerators, spray rigs, backhoes, tractors, and other related equipment.
- Ensure the maintenance of all equipment. Complete daily inspection on all equipment, tools, and vehicles. Communicate issues or needs to supervisor promptly. Assist with compliance of Preventative Maintenance schedule and needs for all equipment, tools, and vehicles.
- Ensure safe work practices by actions that include, but are not limited to: verify work areas are secure and safe for employees and park users before work begins and during work performance; assess for, identify, and mitigate risks in order to reduce accidents, incidents, and injuries; report all problems, risks, safety issues, accidents, incidents, and injuries to supervisors and other required City staff; and attend and participate in all safety training.
- Spray and/or apply various fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, and other related chemicals in City parks and other City owned properties.
- Perform activities for the maintenance of horticulture and/or arboriculture areas, including but not limited to: plant flowerbeds, and remove, tip, prune, and trim trees.
- Install, maintain, and replace various park amenities, such as playground equipment, fences, water fountains, splash pads, benches, tables, signage, fixtures, etc.
- Install, maintain, and repair irrigation lines, valves, heads, and controllers.
- Provide quality customer service to internal and external customers by identifying opportunities to improve efficiency, service delivery methods, and procedures, as well as responding to and resolving inquiries, complaints, and service requests. Consult with supervisors regarding more complex issues.
- Adhere to all City of Roanoke policies, including Personnel, Safety, Administrative, and departmental procedures, policies, etc.
- Regular, reliable, and punctual attendance is required.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, overtime, and some holidays as needed.
- Cross-train in other areas as requested.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
- Demonstrate a willingness to expand knowledge and skills of the care, development, and maintenance of plants and trees in an urban setting.
- Maintain a high standard of customer service and a professional attitude with all internal and external customers.
Requirements
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of basic construction and repair methods.
- Knowledge of the maintenance, repair, and field game preparation of both synthetic and natural turf athletic fields.
- Knowledge of the mechanics and troubleshooting of irrigation systems and splash pads.
- Knowledge of basic horticulture and arboriculture techniques.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating procedures, application instructions, etc.
- Intermediate oral, interpersonal, and written communication skills, including the ability to write reports and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to work well under pressure; prioritize effectively; exhibit appropriate decision making; and perform successfully in a dynamic, changing environment with professionalism, flexibility, and adaptability.
- Ability to utilize strong attention to detail; exhibit effective professional judgement through initiative and creative problem solving; and effective organization skills.
- Ability to safely operate or use equipment, tools, and cleaning supplies for the assigned duties. Ability to use a variety of hand and power tools, as well as various types of landscaping equipment.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment, and treat co-workers, vendors, and patrons with professionalism, courtesy, and respect.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Two (2) years of experience performing similar or identical tasks in a landscaping setting required. Experience in a leadership role preferred.
- The following licenses or certifications are preferred:
- Licensed Irrigator (Texas Commission on Environmental Quality)
- Landscape Irrigation Technician (Texas Commission on Environmental Quality)
- Certified Pool Operator (Texas Pool & Hot Tub Alliance)
- Must have valid Texas Driver’s license prior to employment and safe driving record.
- Must pass a pre-employment screening, background check and employment eligibility verification.
